The giver should also examine whether the receiver is a suitable vessel, and the receiver should also examine whether the giver possesses the qualities. Through examination, they should determine whether it is appropriate to establish a connection with each other. If they do not examine in this way and casually establish connections with anyone, revealing secrets to those who are not vessels, the guru will break their vows, and the disciples will also be unable to keep the vows they have taken, thus breaking their precepts. Therefore, both parties will equally break their vows, so it is necessary to examine. If, upon examination, they find that the other party does not possess the qualifications of a vessel, they should not teach the secret Dharma. As it is said in the Explanatory Tantra Vajra Garland: "Just as the milk of a lioness should not be placed in an earthen vessel, so the great tantra of yoga should not be given to those who are not vessels." Therefore, seeing the great fault of casually bestowing empowerment without examination, that tantra says: "Examine for twelve years." This means that if you cannot quickly understand whether the other person is a vessel, you should examine them for a long time. The second part has two points: the characteristics to be abandoned and the characteristics to be relied upon. The first point is: If it is necessary to examine whether a guru is qualified, then what kind of person is an unqualified guru? A wise disciple should not rely on a guru who is: "Without compassion and wrathful, arrogant, attached, undisciplined, and boastful." This means that a wise, that is, a disciple with wisdom, should not rely on a guru. What kind of guru should they not rely on? It is the guru with the faults from being without compassion to being boastful. Among them, being without compassion means not wishing to liberate sentient beings from suffering and its causes, so they are not suitable as a Mahayana spiritual friend. Wrathful means having very strong anger. Malicious means being happy to harm others with body and speech, or holding strong grudges. Arrogant means having very strong pride. Attached means having strong attachment to possessions. Undisciplined means allowing the three doors to be lax in the precepts they have learned. Boastful means showing off even the slightest of their own qualities to others. Furthermore, the thirty-second chapter of the Vajra Dakini Sequence of Distinctions says: "Those who are wrathful and deceitful, those whose speech is very harsh, those who are content with their qualities, should not be relied upon as gurus." The second point is: Then what kind of guru should be relied upon?
