It says, "What should be offered to the lama, and what should the lama bestow? To that, with reverence, with both hands, the wise should receive." This means that whatever is offered upwards to the teacher, the wise disciple should offer with reverence, offering with both hands, and not only that, but also whatever the lama bestows upon oneself, that should also be received with reverence and with both hands. In the Chakgyur it says, "That is to offer and receive with reverence, with both hands, with wisdom." This is said to be true. In the Samputa it says, "Whatever is given, that and that, should be received after bowing." This means that one should bow when receiving what is given. Secondly, the incidental meaning is: "With mindfulness unforgetting, diligent in one's own conduct, for those of the same lineage who have transgressed their own conduct, correct each other with joy." This means that mindfulness without forgetting one's own vows is a symbol, and with that and with undiminished awareness, by being diligent in one's own conduct, the precepts of Vajradhara, etc., in this way, for those of the same lineage, i.e., friends of the same lama, those who have transgressed their own conduct, precepts, etc., should also be corrected so that they do not violate the precepts. Moreover, with a joyful mind, mutually, i.e., one to another, be Dharma friends. The Chaklo translates, "With mindfulness unforgetting." This is in the context of how to attend to the lama, incidentally showing how to treat friends. Secondly, the special exception is: "Due to illness, in the work of the lama, even if one does not respectfully grant, even if one engages in what is forbidden, for the virtuous-minded, it will not become sin." This shows how the sick are without fault. That is, for things like despising the lama, slandering, and disturbing the lama's mind, there is no permission depending on circumstances, but for things like "sitting on a bed and going ahead," which are merely faults of discipline, permission is granted depending on circumstances for someone like a sick person. Moreover, even if a sick person wants to respectfully accomplish the service of the lama, but is unable to do so due to illness, and even if one engages in what is forbidden, such as sitting on a bed in front of the lama, for those who have a very virtuous mind, it will not become a sin of discipline, i.e., a downfall. So, for those, the lama allows.

Is it necessary to ask for permission? At that time, even if permission is not granted, there is no fault in participating, so there is no need to ask for permission. Chag Lotsawa said: For illness and the activities of the lama, through supplication and granting permission, even if forbidden things are done, there will be no downfall for the virtuous-minded. According to this translation, even if one is not ill, for some cases that are purely disciplinary, there will be no fault even if the lama grants permission, which is what it is explaining. Regarding the way to be without fault in more detail, it is said in the Ornament of Essence: Illness and decline of power, activities and the benefit of others and great meaning, the unborn teachings need to be possessed, obtaining ability and permission, commands and obstacles, from which one should know that there is no fault. Thus it is said. The third is to summarize the meaning of the way to serve: What is the use of saying so much here? One should do what pleases the lama, and abandon all that displeases the lama, and strive to do that and that. "Accomplishment follows the teacher," said the Vajra Holder himself, knowing this, with all things, make the lama completely happy. Thus it is said. When serving the lama, what is the use of saying so much? One should grasp the essence of serving the lama. That is to know what pleases the lama and then practice it, to know what displeases the lama and then abandon it, and to strive to do that. Doing so is also that all accomplishments follow after pleasing the Vajra Master, that is, following and doing, the Vajra Holder himself said, so knowing this, with all things of the three doors of body, speech, and mind, make the lama Vajra Master happy. In the Vajra Essence Ornament Tantra it is also said: Therefore, with all methods, the Vajra Holder, the supreme lama, make him happy by conforming to him, and when he is pleased, all the Buddhas are pleased. Thus it is said. The second is the time to explain the way to serve: The disciple with a pure mind, having taken refuge in the Three Jewels, this following of the lama, should be given to recitation. Thus it is said. To give, this is the basis of the explanation. What should be given? It is the treatise on the way to serve by abandoning one's own autonomy and following the lama. For what purpose should it be given? It is to give for recitation, that is, to repeatedly recite so as not to forget the words of this treatise.
