I give this so that (others) may know the words and meanings, remember and rely on them, and properly engage in acceptance and rejection. To whom do I give it? To the disciple. What kind of disciple? One who has two characteristics: first, taking refuge in the Three Jewels of Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, that is, having the uncommon refuge vow. Second, having a pure intention, that is, properly generating the two types of Bodhicitta, aspiration and engagement. This indicates that this treatise is taught to those who are well-versed in the common path of the two vehicles of Mantra and Paramita. Regarding how to fully study the two types of refuge and Bodhicitta, I have already extensively explained it in the "Stages of the Path to Enlightenment." After this, (the text says:) "Then, with the blessing of mantras, etc., after becoming a vessel of the sacred Dharma." This means that after learning the method of relying on the Guru, one can become a vessel of the Mantra path. Therefore, if one wants to enter the door of Mantra after practicing the common path, how should the Vajra Master and Vajra disciple rely on each other? This is the intention of this treatise. Therefore, although the great translator Drokmi during the time of Sta gon advocated teaching the "Fifty Verses" on the same day before the main practice after taking refuge and generating Bodhicitta, Mal Gyo Lotsawa said, "It is Nāropā's view to teach this treatise before one has practiced the common path and before one wants to become a Mantra master and disciple." This is a good statement. The order of guiding disciples in this treatise is in accordance with the "Collected Practices of the Fifty Verses on the Guru," and the key points are also very important, which I have already explained in the "Stages of the Path." If someone asks: It is unreasonable to teach the "Fifty Verses" before empowerment, because there will be the fault of divulging secrets. Answer: There is no fault. Because there are very few uncommon Mantra terms in this treatise, and even if there are, their explanations are only brief and unclear. Furthermore, for example, when a disciple initially requests empowerment, if the necessary materials are not prepared, in order to protect him, (the Guru) will have him do some deity visualization and recitation, which can be done before empowerment, and this is not the same as divulging secrets.

Furthermore, for those who have practiced the common path and wish to enter the Mantrayana, not just anyone is suitable as a guide for the initial entry. As it is said in the forty-sixth chapter of the 'Vajra Dakini's Sequential Division': "At the soles of the disciple's feet, contemplate a bow-shaped wind mandala. In the navel, a wisdom fire blazes. Its rays blaze in the heart. Meditate on the blazing, pervading everything. From vaṃ (藏文,梵文天城体:वं,梵文罗马拟音:vaṃ,汉语字面意思:வம்) arises an unsightly form. Expel sins through the nostrils. Then contemplate the form of a wrathful deity. Meditate on it consuming everything." It also says: "Having generated the form of the deity to be accomplished, one should recite the protective mantras." Many scriptures state that the deity is Samantabhadra 316, and one should generate his form. It is not that the teacher does this contemplation without telling the disciple; it is not so. In the 'Mandala Ritual Vajra Garland' it says: "For the sake of recitation, the coiled mantra is also given to this one." It is said that the mantra for recitation should also be given to the disciple, and the 'Ten Realities' also explains it in this way, therefore both teacher and student should meditate. Thus, in general, no matter which vehicle one enters, the way of relying on the guru is very important, as is often stated. Especially for Vajrayana practitioners, all accomplishments come from following the guru, which is greatly emphasized in many tantras. Therefore, the root of the path is the way of relying on the Vajra master. However, one cannot understand these teachings with just one or two simple sessions of guru yoga contemplation. Therefore, one must strive to master the meaning of this treatise. Having mastered it, one must also rely on mindfulness and awareness to strive to keep the vows of Vajradhara. If one does so, these faults will gradually decrease, and one will feel regret for transgressing the vows and want to make amends. Thus, whether in this life or in future lives, one will not be delayed for long and will become like Sudhana and Sadāprarudita, skilled in relying on spiritual friends and able to practice like them. If one does not understand these things, or if one understands them but does not put on the armor of protection, then these faults, which are easy to occur and numerous, will constantly stain us, and even in many lifetimes, one will not be able to learn these vows. Therefore, one must have wisdom.
