Therefore, you should regard this treatise as the essence of the instructions on Guru Yoga. Third, explaining how to make it a suitable vessel: Thereafter, by the blessing of mantras, etc., the vows of Dharma are made into a suitable vessel. The fourteen root downfalls should be recited and upheld. Thus it is said. After practicing the common stages of the path and learning how to rely on the Guru, then the disciple's mindstream should be made into a suitable vessel. Into what should it be made a suitable vessel? The supreme ones are the Buddhas. The Dharma is the precious tantras, etc., which are the expressed words well spoken by them, and the two, the stages of the path, etc., which are the expressers, should be made into vessels for hearing and practicing them. By what method should it be made into a vessel? Regarding the word "mantras, etc.," in the Compendium of Vow Rituals, it says: Thereafter, by the blessing of secret mantras. Because it is secret and hidden that it is accomplished, and because it is not an object of non-vessels, it is secret. Mantra, its Sanskrit word is Mantra (梵文天城体:मन्त्र,梵文罗马拟音:mantra,汉语字面意思:Mantra), Man (梵文天城体:मन्,梵文罗马拟音:man,汉语字面意思:Mind) is mind, and Tra (梵文天城体:त्र,梵文罗马拟音:tra,汉语字面意思:Protection) is protection, so because it protects the mind, it is mantra. In the eighteenth chapter of the Collection Sutra, it says: Whatever mind arises from the causes of the senses and objects, that mind is called Man, and Tra means to protect. Thus it is said. There are many ways to protect the mind, but here it must be to protect the mind through empowerment, so it is made into a vessel through the door of blessing it. From what does it protect the mind? As Shantideva said: It protects from the suffering of the lower realms and samsara, and from the Lesser Vehicle, so it is protection. Having thus made it a suitable vessel, then what should be done first? What should be done first is that it is very important to ensure that the vows and commitments received at the time of empowerment are not broken, because if the vows are abandoned, the root of attaining siddhis will be cut off, so then practicing the path and teaching and listening to the tantras, etc., is like wanting to build on a foundationless ground. Therefore, after the empowerment, it is necessary to determine the boundary of whether or not one will fall and protect it, so the Guru must explain the precepts of the mantra vows, and then the disciple must understand, because it is not permissible to fully hear the precepts of the mantra before the empowerment. Although there are many precepts, the root downfalls that sever the vows, with others and
