Therefore, we will all certainly die. The Sutra of Dispelling Sorrow states: "If even the bodies of the Buddhas, adorned with excellent marks and signs, the vajra bodies, are impermanent, then what need is there to mention sentient beings like trees by the water's edge?" Therefore, even our teacher Shakyamuni Buddha, who has attained freedom over birth and death, out of compassion for taming those who cling to permanence, ultimately entered into nirvana, causing sadness. Similarly, the emanations of Indian and Tibetan pandits, kings, ministers, and bodhisattvas have also come and made such contributions to Buddhism, as recorded in the histories of Dharma, biographies, and so on. But now, not even one of them remains, which is evident and heartbreaking. So many of our own relatives, friends, and other beings who were here last year, yesterday, or even last month have now departed to the next world, leaving behind only corpses and names. Therefore, we too will certainly die. Now we have reached the degenerate age, and even if we could live out our full lifespan, the time for twenty-one thousand breaths is becoming shorter and shorter, and a single day is becoming shorter. Thirty days make a month, and twelve months make a year, so life passes effortlessly. The Extensive Play Sutra states: "The three realms are impermanent like autumn clouds, the birth and death of beings is like watching a dance, the lifespan of beings is like lightning in the sky, flowing swiftly like water cascading down a steep mountain." Therefore, we should contemplate well this reality in which we cannot remain for even a moment, and in order to obtain the essence of life, we should generate diligence like a fire burning on our head. Second, to cultivate this in the mind-stream from the perspective of key instructions: For those who have an understanding of Dharma, inspiring renunciation by quoting scriptures is pure and touches their hearts. For beginners and those with very obscure wisdom, use stories, legends, and captivating methods, as these are essential and should be combined with the student's disposition. Furthermore, if one finds oneself in a strange and terrifying place, a vast plain with no human traffic, where the wind howls and there is only thatch grass, feeling lost and distraught, then suddenly, from nowhere,

Two kinds of people, male and female, with black and white skin, appeared. In a place called the City of Six Illusions, there was a wish-fulfilling jewel called Binding. To obtain it, one had to take a boat across a great river. They said, 'Do we three wish to go together?' To this, I focused my mind and followed them. Without realizing it, we arrived at a place where the great ocean seemed to have fallen from the sky, boundless in its expanse, with waves soaring into the air. Within it were crocodiles, large fish, otters, hippos, and so on. In short, it was filled with many creatures whose heads and bodies were mismatched, creatures that one had never seen before and that made one's hair stand on end, creatures that moved in and out of the wrinkles of the waves. When we arrived there, I was very frightened and wanted to run away, but I was driven by the desire to obtain the jewel. So I boarded the boat that the two of them had launched and crossed the great ocean. When we reached the middle of the great ocean, a terrible red wind arose. Unable to bear the terror, I paddled with great exhaustion, and as a result, the paddles in the hands of both of them broke at the same time. The waves seemed to be rolling in the sky, and sometimes I thought the boat was floating on the crest of a wave, and sometimes I thought the water was flying in the air and the boat was sinking to the bottom of the ocean. At that time, there was no escape, no support, and nowhere to grab. Death, death, that terrible thought, was forced into the space between breaths. Having never thought of death before, I had no confidence in having practiced the Dharma. Sons, wealth, relatives, neighbors, houses, and neighbors, I would be separated from them all today, and they would be of no use at all. Alas, how terrible! What should I do now? Alas! Woe is me! Woe is me! Woe is me! As I was uttering cries of lamentation and despair, in the sky in front of me, the kind guru himself appeared in the form of Orgyen Great Master Padmasambhava with a garland of skulls, dancing gracefully. 'Alas! You have regarded the suffering nature of samsara as a wish-fulfilling jewel, and so you have never thought of the Dharma of death. Your present clinging and strong manifestation are due to the single nature of self-ignorance.'
