It is necessary. Some say that they are of little wisdom and cannot listen and contemplate; some say that they are of little fortune and cannot accomplish offerings with defilements; some say that they are old and frail and cannot practice the Dharma, etc. Saying so is mainly because of insufficient mental strength. If one generates diligence and courage, it is said in the scriptures that even animals can attain liberation, let alone humans. Shantideva said, "How can I attain Bodhi? One should not be discouraged because of this. Because the Tathagata speaks truthfully, he speaks this truth. Bees, flies, mosquitoes, and any other insects, if they generate the power of diligence, can also attain the unsurpassed Bodhi that is difficult to obtain. I am born as a human being, able to distinguish between benefit and harm, if I do not abandon the Bodhi practice, why can't I attain Bodhi?" Also, in the Ornament of the Sutras, it is said, "If sentient beings are reborn as humans, in every moment, they can attain complete Bodhi, therefore, one should not accept shrinking back." Therefore, for any virtuous deed, one should not be satisfied with the status quo, nor should one limit it with quantity. As it is said in the Flower Ornament Sutra, "Good son, you should not be attached to one root of virtue, nor should you think that it is enough to perfect one Dharma and one behavior. Why is that? Good son, the Bodhisattva should accumulate immeasurable roots of virtue." Now, no matter how hard we try to do good deeds, if we observe carefully, it is difficult not to mix them with evil and unwholesome deeds. Even if there are a few unmixed good deeds, most people find it difficult to accumulate roots of virtue corresponding to the three supremes because their minds are not pure. Therefore, the merit that is exhausted once it matures, even if it is considered as high as Mount Sumeru, is like autumn clouds, very unreliable. Therefore, even the slightest thought of raising and lowering one's hands should be transformed into pure virtuous deeds. The fourth mind-training method is: From the Son's Book, it says: "One must obtain the Guru's instructions in any way, through whatever means."

And thinking that it should be obtained. It says, "Thus, no matter where one revolves in the six realms mentioned earlier, one should know that there is only suffering and no happiness even as small as the tip of a needle. Even if one only understands and is disgusted with it, one cannot be liberated from that suffering by that alone. One must take to heart only the means that are beneficial to it. What is that? In the Sutra of Advice to King Gsal, it says: Great King, at that time, at that time, there is no protector or refuge other than the Holy Dharma. At that time, the Holy Dharma is the protector, refuge, support, island, and ally. It is said that it is not just reading black letters, but like butter from milk and smoke from fire, one should rely only on the root of the path, the virtuous friend, and take the essence. The Compendium says: The wise lama should always be relied upon. Why? Because the qualities of the wise arise from that. Just as a group of patients relies on a doctor for healing, one should rely on a virtuous friend without distraction. It is said that the qualities of the lama to be relied upon are: In the Sutra of the Jewel Heap, Maitreya asked: How should one rely on a virtuous friend? The Buddha replied: A virtuous friend is one who, whatever Dharma he teaches, always thinks of the ultimate truth of the Dharma realm and teaches it clearly. That is a virtuous friend who should be led from the straight path. It is said that based on that, as stated in the Ornament of the Sutras, one who has well tamed his mind with the three higher trainings, not just in one aspect, but has heard much, the qualities of the scriptures. The wisdom of realizing that very truth, the qualities of learning that are far superior to those of the disciples. With the power of discernment, which is abundant in distinguishing the meaning of the scriptures with reason, he is pleasing to the ears of those to be tamed and is skilled in leading them to the ultimate path. Without regard for gain and respect, he has compassion for the weak beings. He has diligence without weariness in accomplishing the benefit of others. He is not tired of teaching again and again, and he has the courage to endure wrong views. One must rely on such a holy lama. If we divide it into subcategories, as it says in the General Sutra, the Condensed Thought Sutra: Outwardly, a lama who is skilled in cutting off attachments; inwardly, the secret mantra of
