In striving for the means of (liberation), the Omniscient (Je Tsongkhapa) said, "As the Asuras are in extreme suffering, may beings who find peace through virtue quickly become a treasure of the sacred Dharma." Just like that. Thus, the suffering of samsara is endless and heavy, escaping from one suffering only to fall into another, like scooping water with a bucket or a bee in a jar, its nature is only suffering. As it says in the "Letter of Exhortation": "Whoever constantly revolves in the wheel of samsara, entering into it and thinking that merely dwelling there is happiness, that one will certainly, involuntarily, gradually, hundreds and thousands of times, wander together with beings both equal and unequal." So it is said. Now, one might think, will the Buddha protect all the sufferings of the lower realms and the common sufferings of the six realms? It is not so. The Vinaya Sutra says, "I have shown you the path to liberation, liberation depends on your own effort." Therefore, because we are ignorant of what to accept and reject, the Sugata merely shows the path to liberation in various ways, but liberation from samsara and the lower realms depends entirely on one's own effort, for example, just as when one is intoxicated by sleep, no one can prevent a dream. If it were not so, then the compassionate Buddhas, with the rays of compassion of just one Buddha, would surely have emptied this world countless eons ago. Therefore, we have fallen into the pit of samsara, bound by the tight chains of grasping, pierced by the arrows of affliction, with no choice but to experience present suffering and invite future suffering. Having reflected well on this, generate immeasurable compassion for all sentient beings of the six realms. In order to lead all these beings to the path of liberation, from this day forward, offer to the Three Jewels, the source of all qualities, in various ways, and even for an instant of unwholesome thought, restrain it with powerful antidotes and confess and vow not to repeat it. The Vinaya Sutra says, "Even small sins should not be despised, thinking they are harmless, for small sparks of fire can burn a pile of grass as big as a mountain." And accumulate even small portions of virtuous thoughts, spending time only with pure white virtuous deeds.
