Thus, by explaining in the usual way, the meaning is accomplished. Next, contemplating the suffering of animals and training the mind: In the 'Letter to a Friend,' it says, 'Even in the place of animal existence, there is killing, and various sufferings such as binding and beating. For those who have become peaceful and abandoned virtue, one eats the other, which is extremely unbearable.' Animals are categorized into two types: those that gather and those that scatter. Then, contemplate the suffering described in the Compendium of Topics and take it to heart. Again, visualize yourself, due to afflictions like the darkness of ignorance, being born in an instant in the great outer ocean, where animals such as fish, conches, and crocodiles dwell, with no space between them, crowded like the mash of a brewery. Sometimes, when you become large, the smaller ones pierce your body, causing pain like an arrow striking the heart. Sometimes, when you become small, you are swallowed by the larger ones, causing suffering like being placed in an iron mold. In the darkness between the outer edges of this world and other worlds, where there is no light from the sun and moon, you cannot even see the extension of your own arm, and you experience suffering. Scattered animals, such as birds, wild animals, insects, bees, and predators, for those who are not possessed, there is natural suffering such as cold, heat, hunger, and thirst, and one eats the other. Tonight, now, for a short time, life is on the inner and outer edges, and everything seen by the eyes, such as humans, appears as executioners with weapons in hand, and all appearances are filled with suspicion, so that when eating a mouthful of food, the head must look in eight directions. In particular, hunters, fishermen, and bird catchers kill in an instant with merciless fear. Possessed animals, such as horses, cattle, sheep, goats, yaks, etc., are all fitted with iron mouthpieces, ridden for long distances, and tormented. Some are turned upside down, their warm chests cut open with sharp knives, their entrails removed, and their breath of life cut off. Others are pierced through the nose, cut, beaten, have live blood drawn, and are burdened with excessive loads. Similarly, for the nagas, there are sand and stones.
