Thinking and wishing, may all sentient beings be liberated from suffering. As soon as this thought arises, negative karma is instantly exhausted, and it merges into the heart of the Great Master of Oddiyana (Padmasambhava). Thinking that I have become the supreme guide leading beings. Whether happiness or suffering arises, observe its own nature and let awareness rest in its natural state. Next, contemplate the suffering of the pretas (hungry ghosts). In the "Letter to a Friend," it says: In the realm of pretas, The suffering caused by the lack of desire, Continues uninterruptedly. The suffering caused by hunger, thirst, cold, heat, fatigue, and fear, Is extremely unbearable, a truthful statement. As it is said. Thinking that there are three types of pretas, briefly recall their suffering. Also, because of one's own attachment and clinging to food, clothing, and possessions, and because of the stinginess that arises towards offerings and respect in special places, with this as a cause, instantly visualize oneself being born as an outer-obstructed preta. Visualize that in order to enjoy the fruits of trees and rivers, one travels a long distance, becoming exhausted, but is guarded by people holding weapons, and unpleasant things like pus and blood appear, feeling very ashamed and unable to bear the suffering of hunger and thirst. Also, visualize the inner-obstructed preta, in that desolate wilderness, a place of misery without any desirable things like water or trees, unable to find food and drink for years and months, suffering greatly. Even if one finds a little medicine, it cannot enter the mouth as small as the eye of a needle. Even if it barely enters, it cannot pass through the throat as thin as a horse's mane. Even if it passes through, it cannot fill the stomach as large as Mount Meru, and the limbs are as thin as reeds, unable to support the body, etc. Experiencing extremely miserable suffering. Also, visualize the food-obstructed preta, when food and drink enter the stomach, they ignite and burn the body. One eats one's own flesh, and eats excrement and urine, suffering greatly. In summer, when feeling hot, the cool touch of the moon also becomes scorching. In winter, when feeling cold, the rays of the sun also become cold, and the hot and cold are unbalanced. Seeing rivers, they dry up just by looking at them, and unpleasant dry riverbeds appear, etc., experiencing immeasurable suffering of hunger and thirst. Such suffering cannot be ended in a short time, but must be experienced for fifteen thousand years. Thinking of this, one feels weary and discouraged.

One should meditate on that. Then, in the space in front, the root guru himself appears in the guise of the Great Orgyen (Sanskrit: Udyāna), saying: 'Alas! The suffering accumulated by your stinginess has fallen upon you without fail, and even the Buddhas of the three times are difficult to save you. As Shakyamuni Buddha said to King Holds-Form-Essence, take ownership of karma and meditate on the joy of the exhaustion of bad karma. With a compassionate mind for the suffering of sentient beings like yourself, generate the courage to take on the addition of your own suffering and rely on the antidote.' Upon hearing these words, one thinks: 'Alas! Just by clinging to cherishing sentient beings like myself, I have wandered in endless samsara until now and experienced such suffering. For the pretas who are like me and of the same kind, who are as numerous as the grains of sand of the Ganges River, there is only this suffering, so it is very pitiful. Now, I should endure my own suffering and also gladly take on the suffering of other sentient beings.' At the moment of thinking that the city of pretas is destroyed from its foundations, bad karma is exhausted in an instant, and one becomes enlightened without being separate from the intention of the Great Orgyen. Thinking that those sentient beings are also drawn by the rays of light from my heart, one takes them away and consults the khenpo. That is, like the hells mentioned above. In the Vinaya Sutra, it says: 'Then, Maudgalyayana reached the end of the ocean and saw many short-lived sentient hells, such as mortars, brooms, and trees, tormented by suffering.' etc. The neighboring hells exist within the two groups of the eight hot hells, and their respective locations are found in the Supreme Vehicle Treasury. The short-lived ones exist uncertainly in various earth, water, fire, and wind. The neighboring ones exist around the two groups of the eight hot hells.' Thus, it is summarized by one category. Regarding the pretas just mentioned, the Omniscient Great One also said: 'Pretas wander in the expanse of the dharmadhatu, abiding in the place of the dharmadhatu.' Those who abide in the dharmadhatu are the first three mentioned above. Those who wander in the sky or are minute are found in the Root Tantra of the Chariot: 'The preta ghosts who wander in the sky, as well as yakshas, rakshasas, fierce ones, and kings, etc.' As taught, for students with sharp faculties, one should explain in detail the meaning of the three virtues.
