Maintain a long duration of looking. Keep the duration of meditation short. Once it becomes slightly clear, gradually shorten the duration of looking and lengthen the duration of meditation. This is how to train. Secondly, at that time, forgetting the object of focus, laziness, doubting accomplishment, dullness, agitation, striving without knowing satisfaction even when the deity is clear, and non-striving by remaining indifferent even when it is unclear – these are the seven common faults. Dimness, obscurity, like a shadow or darkness, changes in the size of the body, changes in attire, changes in shape, changes in number, changes in posture, only color appearing, only shape appearing, gradual fading, and incomplete features – these are the antidotes to the twelve faults of change. For forgetting, rely on mindfulness. For laziness, generate faith and diligence. For doubt, rest in the expanse of reality. When dull, rely on alertness and coolness. When agitated, generate renunciation and criticize the way of looking. When striving, relax the mind. When not striving, generate diligence. Similarly, for the three – dimness, obscurity, and shadow-like appearance – cover the eyes with rainbow crystals and the like, look at the object of focus and examine the shape. Meditate in the mind. For the four – changes in the size of the body, attire, posture, and shape – contemplate the body as extremely large, with wild animals playing on the limbs, pigeons entering and exiting from the nostrils, and so forth. Especially for peaceful deities, visualize the nature of possessing nine qualities manifesting clearly, as stated in the Wrathful Lightning Sutra: Each and every such supreme body possesses nine qualities: softness, slenderness, entwining grace, swaying grace, attachment and youthfulness, clarity, radiance, majestic beauty, and blazing splendor, abiding therein. For wrathful deities, contemplate possessing the nine sentiments of dance, as stated in the Kalapa: Charm, valor, unpleasantness, laughter and intensity, fearfulness, compassion, majesty, and peace – adorned with the nine sentiments of dance. For changes in number, as stated in the Root Tantra of Magical Illusion: Even many gatherings of deities are the great magical display of the mind. Therefore, by remembering the nature of the retinue appearing from the magical display of the sole principal deity, practice skill. When only color appears, clarify the shape. When only shape appears, adorn it with various colors. When gradually fading, make the face and hands very large.

Meditate on the deity. Regarding what is incomplete, specifically clarify it from the aspect of its incompleteness. The third is called "separating the deity" in between those, which is to alternately engage in non-conceptual equipoise and deity meditation in order to release the breath of relaxation. Once the deity is clearly visualized without error, separate the deity from non-conceptuality and meditate solely on the deity. The fourth is, having become skilled in this way, the method for arousing the deity path or practicing skill: Meditate on the deity standing. Meditate on the deity sitting. Meditate on the deity lying down. Meditate on the deity in a common posture. Meditate on the deity supine. Meditate on the deity prone. Meditate on the deity far away. Meditate on the deity nearby. Meditate on the deity in a mountain cave. Meditate on the deity in the depths of the ocean. Meditate on the deity as extremely large, like Mount Meru. Meditate on the deity as extremely small, like a dust particle. Thus, if one can meditate anywhere, it is called "the experience of habit like a river," which means the deity path has been aroused. The fifth is, after that, it is called "mixing with the deity," which is to abandon the dualistic clinging to the object of meditation and the meditator, and to meditate by mixing the form of the deity with one's own mind inseparably, without any interruption of conceptual thought. To remain for as long as one wishes in the fully perfected body is called "the stable experience like Mount Meru." Furthermore, even the pores of the skin and the black and white of the eyes are clearly visible, and one is not robbed by any external circumstances. Day and night, one perfects the skill as the great sovereign of any mandala, and the degree of clarity is: clear, distinct, vivid, and bright, these four. The degree of stability is: unmoving, unchanging, not manifestly changing, and able to be transformed into anything, these four. Having attained the eight degrees of clarity and stability, it is called "the experience of reaching the end," which means that appearance is mixed with the mandala of the deity. The sixth is, merely mixing in this way is not sufficient. In order to apply it to the meaning of the deity, one's own mind, including the eight aggregates of consciousness, appears as the body and wisdom of the deity. Moreover, if the awareness, the mind of enlightenment, is not blended into the great wisdom body of inseparable generation and completion, which from the beginning has matured into the fruit of the deity's body as many flavors in one, then merely increasing the habitual tendencies of practicing the generation stage in one's own continuum will only lead to the attainment of Rudra and Rakshasa, because it turns one's back on the path of liberation. Therefore, the oral instructions of the four vital nails are taught as precious, as stated in the thirty-ninth chapter of the Secret Completion Tantra: Wisdom...
