of the mind. Having become distracted from the east, he was seized by the genitals by a magician and was about to be killed. The giant said: A giant who has lost his memory and awareness, killed by a diligent and weak man. There is no enemy more powerful than this distracted mind, and I have not seen a more cunning deception. He said and died. Similarly, when the master of meditation is distracted by objects, the rope of mindfulness is cut, and even if he is skilled in the five sciences, he is led to the city of delusion without realizing that he is a thief who undermines the inner science. When the great translator Rngog Lotsawa went to Haspo Mountain, he said: This pile of hair, piled up like an umbrella, showed its nature like the king of mountains and deceived. This shows that without the wisdom of meditation, hearing and thinking cannot determine the path and the ground. He was a holy being prophesied by the Manjushri Root Tantra, and he had no self-generated thoughts. Because he was especially loving to others, he gave instructions. Because the Dharma of mindfulness is practiced diligently, it can subdue the afflictions, and in this life, it can also obtain great happiness and merit. Starting from the first mindfulness in the accumulation path, to the power of mindfulness in the path of preparation, the first of the seven branches of enlightenment in the path of seeing, and the seventh of the noble paths in the path of meditation is also mindfulness, so in order to manifest all the qualities of the five paths. In particular, the nature of mindfulness naturally abides in the Dharma of meditation, and is not controlled by sinking and excitement, which is called the samadhi of the union of calm and insight. If you try too hard, the mind will be distracted, and if you lose the antidote of mindfulness, you will lose insight. In short, all the virtuous dharmas in the path of accumulation and preparation below this are also conditioned, and their nature is also conditioned, so they are called conditioned mindfulness, which is established in the path of ordinary beings, and the meaning is gradually distinguished. The Treasury of Precious Instructions says: The first karmic person should not be distracted by conditioned things. Students of equality and later learning should not be distracted by Dharma nature. Through habit, do not be distracted by the wisdom of memory and appearance. In the state of emptiness, there is no distraction, no distractor. When stability is achieved, the place of distraction is definitely the nature of Dharma. When the Dharma is exhausted, it transcends symbols and words. Please strive to reach such a level. Thus it is said.

If a yogi establishes abandoning all the colorful languages of the path as the characteristic of mindfulness for a meditator, then, for those with excellent wisdom and the disposition of sudden enlightenment, the characteristic of the Great Perfection of self-nature is that mindfulness is not placed on top of meditation, but mindfulness itself is perfected as the essence of meditation, which is particularly great. Even so, because it is difficult to be bound by good view, lineage, and merit, for those who cannot fully understand this, if they are not led to cultivate meditation with mindfulness like others, scattering will occur and they will not be able to realize it. Therefore, there are two stages of cultivation. From the perspective of the first, mindfulness itself is perfected as the essence of meditation, so there is no difference between the object of observation and the observer. Even in times of distraction, the thought itself becomes mindfulness, just like fire and heat have the same taste. Mindfulness and thought become one taste, and there is no certainty of realization for the way of sudden enlightenment. According to the second, mindfulness grasps during meditation. In times of distraction, mindfulness itself becomes thought, so it is subject to delusion. Or, when mindfulness arrives, one enters meditation. In this way, if one guards with perseverance as if fighting peak to peak, then when mindfulness becomes strong, thought is a temporary stain and cannot withstand the face of mindfulness, just as fire and fuel meet, or a lamp is raised in the dark. No matter how many thoughts arise, they cannot disturb meditation, and the nature of thought itself becomes mindfulness, which is called the arising of antidote, and is the power of mindfulness of intentional action. If one does not guard with perseverance, the power of mindfulness will gradually decrease, and ignorance and the collection of thoughts will increase, becoming dull through meditation, as shown by the example of the greedy shepherd. How is that? In the past, a very greedy shepherd found a large golden pot in a nomadic monastery. He was so happy that he even relaxed his care for the livestock. He even forgot to eat, and just kept moving the golden pot with his left and right hands. Even when he saw traps and mice, he was afraid that others would steal his golden pot. He sang a song saying: The poor man has no tsampa in his hand, and the curd that is mistaken for butter brings bad omens to people's teeth. After a few days there, he to his animals...
