Memory, Self-Liberated. By the reckoning of the nature of reality, memory dissolves on its own. Since wisdom has no delusion, the intellect of memory cannot take hold. Here, in the Stages of Meditation, it says: 'Furthermore, even if there is no memory and no attention, how can one enter the absence of inherent existence of all phenomena if there is no accurate discrimination? Even if all phenomena are only abiding in emptiness of inherent existence, without discrimination, one will not realize their emptiness.' And so forth, because the characteristics are extremely different, memory itself is established as an object of discrimination, and holding to this side, the views that are extremely famous and stable in the snowy mountains, and that have attained accomplishment from those paths, are not all correct.' There are many who say this. The Middle Way that abides in the measure of things is known only by the Bhagavan, and the ultimate state of that is also the Dharmakaya, so if its characteristics contradict the knowable objects of speculation, then here, with the tenets of debate, although I do not delight in the position of holding one's own view as supreme and denigrating others, in order to dispel the doubts of those who are extremely attached and deluded, I will briefly explain the points of certainty. Seeing with the pure wisdom born from meditation, which is the path and way of abiding of one's own nature, is all-pervasive as has just been said above, and will still be explained further. In terms of the object of focus, some say that the view of the Svatantrika Madhyamaka has already been seized by the Prasangika, as in Jowo's (Atisha's) Commentary on Entering the Middle Way: 'Among them, things with form are aggregates of subtle particles, and if one analyzes and destroys it by dividing it into parts, then even the extremely minute will not remain, and the extremely apparent will not exist. Things without form are mind, and furthermore, like this, the past mind has ceased and perished, the future mind has not yet arisen and occurred, and the present mind is also like this, extremely difficult to examine, without color, without shape, similar to space, not composed of (the four elements), or separated from one and many, or not arisen, or it is self-luminous by nature, and so forth, if one analyzes and destroys it with the weapon of wisdom, one will realize that it is not established.' Thus, since the two are not established in any essence and are merely non-existent, then the discriminating wisdom itself is also not established, just as two pieces of wood rubbed together...

Just as the fire that burns the two trees after they have been burned and destroyed by causes and conditions also naturally subsides. When all phenomena of self and generality have disappeared, wisdom itself is neither manifest nor luminous, and all faults such as sinking and agitation are eliminated. During that time, consciousness does not discriminate anything, nor does it grasp anything. Abandoning all memory and attention, one should let consciousness abide in such a state as long as the enemy of names or discriminations, or the thief, does not arise. It is said. Therefore, this profound vidyā-mantra of the Prajñāpāramitā, whatever is memory, must be discrimination; whatever is discrimination, must not contradict grasping. Even in the ultimate stage, it can avert the great demon of desire and meat-eating. If so, since the dharma of memory is extremely diminished, is it not similar to the undeclared, the five states of mindlessness described in the Madhyānta-vibhaṅga, such as deep sleep and fainting? If those are also grasped by method, why can't they become undeclared? Even from a common point of view, there is no similarity, because memory and attention are established through the means of abandoning what is to be abandoned. Therefore, at this time, the wisdom of discrimination arises, and it is the proximate taker of mind, speech, thought, intention, birth, characteristics, and so on. Here, the wisdom that is free from mind sees the dharmatā of no memory, the wisdom that is free from speech knows the meaning of the scriptures, the wisdom that is free from thought is not confused about the way the essence abides, the wisdom that transcends intention appears as the vipassanā that exhausts the basis of memory, the wisdom that cuts off birth is liberated from afflictions, and the wisdom that is free from characteristics knows the distinction of non-discrimination. From the perspective of opening up, the naturally luminous awareness is extremely pure, and it is the basis for the arising of all qualities such as eyes and clairvoyance, dhāraṇīs and exhaustion, aspirational wisdom and the ten powers, and it will never cease. Here, in the state of the pāramitā self path, the difference between Buddhas and Bodhisattvas lies in the Śatasāhasrikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra, Subhuti.
