As a remedy for that, it is said: If those sentient beings are truly without any object of attachment in the ultimate sense, then who would revile me, speak unpleasant words, or say rude words, or like striking with stones, sticks, and weapons? All actions are like illusions. Nourishing, being nourished, dependent like the sky. As it is said, "I, sentient being, life, goer, nourisher," etc., one should view the nature of all actions as illusory. In their own nature, the praise and blame of ignorant beings is neither knowing how to praise by seeing virtues, nor determining blame by understanding faults, but merely appears as unpleasant and arbitrary words. Mostly, it is inner turmoil caused by not being able to bear the wealth and perfection of others. Some Bodhisattvas, when entering into practice, bring servants and friends into the Dharma gate of expectation, or when being embraced by the profound rituals of the Mahayana and Mantrayana, various slanders are uttered because the desires of others are controlled by external forces, which is similar to the story of the sage's patience. In particular, our teacher did not entice anyone with wealth to make them follow, nor did he bewilder them with mantras, but when the time for those to be tamed arrived, and appearances were brought under control, in the sutra of skillful means it is said: When a Bodhisattva practices the conduct of a Bodhisattva, in order to fully ripen those young women, the Bodhisattva takes service, and the Bodhisattva, residing within the lotus, can ripen forty-two thousand women. Also, like the daughter of an outcaste, a beautiful woman, the teacher showed attachment, and she was changed into a Bhikshuni, and the people of Shravasti slandered her because of this, but in reality, it was not so. Also, like the Licchavi Vimalakirti, who was tamed by skillful means, with the status of a householder, his power was inconceivable, his biography immeasurable, and even the two supreme ones could not match him, such a work of taming countless beings, ordinary people cannot know, therefore, Bodhisattvas especially need to generate the strength of patience towards these slanders, otherwise, sentient beings will fall into poverty or a state of being without refuge. And some, claiming to be great or holy, pile up scriptures like precious jewels.

Just as the example is cited, "Seeing coral without seeing turquoise," without faith and reverence, one merely pretends to have received some Dharma. For those lamas who have attained qualities of renunciation and realization, they hide them as if they were of a bad caste, and instead resort to divination. For them, this becomes a great obstacle to attaining accomplishment, so one should generate even greater compassion, and one should firmly uphold the vow of patience not to repay kindness. Similarly, patience in thinking about the Dharma arises from remembering the Three Jewels, and patience in accepting difficulties arises from remembering the lineage of past generations and the biographies of holy beings, so one should guard mindfulness and practice the deity. Similarly, the essence of diligence is also the mindfulness or desire to be manifestly joyful in the work to be entered into. When the Teacher was passing away, he took Ananda's hand and said, "Guard my treasury of Dharma with desire, diligence, and mindfulness!" The desire mentioned here is the repeated remembrance of the ultimate result of the task. Diligence is the practice. Mindfulness is the action. Why? Because all the precepts established by the Teacher must become companions to the mind of renunciation. In the Sutra on the Establishment of Mindfulness, it says, "Monks, in the mountains, in caves, in cemeteries, in places without shelter, meditate on piles of grass and so on! Do not dwell with carelessness, otherwise you will regret it at the time of death. This is my final instruction to you." Therefore, this is the final word. Without mindfulness, there is no agent for both diligence and mindfulness. Even if one has courage like King Ashoka or the three ancestral lords (Me Wön Nam Sum), like the sky covering the earth, to apply it to the path of practice, one must counteract laziness with thoughts of not being afraid, not being confused, and not being content. That thought that must be encouraged is mindfulness. Without mindfulness, the task becomes lengthy, and either the enemy, or the demon, or the thief, or the cause of life does not provide help, causing the task not to be completed. Therefore, all those who lose mindfulness fall into the abyss of laziness. In particular, as the Dharma of a practitioner, mindfulness and awareness are needed in all four modes of conduct, as explained in the Nirvana Sutra.
