As it is said, "The best cause of all speech," the mother of letters, A, which arises from the union of wind and mind, gathers with different places of the tongue tip, teeth, gums, and lips, and gives rise to the sounds of vowels and consonants. Moreover, from the gathering of letters comes words, from the gathering of words comes sentences, and from the gathering of sentences comes meaning. Therefore, all conditioned phenomena of the path of truth are known from the cause of letters. From its blessing, the sound of speech, words, and self-identity transcend, and the realization of the Dharma is transferred to the consciousness of the individual, thereby purifying the defilements of the five aggregates and eight consciousnesses, and accomplishing Buddhahood. Among all necessities, it is also the most essential necessity. Even if one does not comprehend so much meaning, one should believe that the scripture is the essence of all the Dharma jewels gathered together, and cultivate utmost respect and reverence. One should invite it to be seated on a throne with a clean silk cushion, and arrange offerings. One should bathe oneself and remain clean, taking refuge, generating bodhicitta, and remembering the Three Jewels, as well as preceding with the seven-branch prayer. Connect with "Namo, the language of the gods, the language of nagas and yakshas," and contemplate that they are also listening to the Dharma. The benefits of reciting without repeating or interrupting words, at a moderate pace, with clear sound, and with a pleasant tone are immeasurable. As it is said in the Perfection of Wisdom Sutra, "If one hears this Dharma category and does not abandon it, then from that basis alone one generates immeasurable merit. What need is there to mention writing, taking, holding, reading, comprehending, and extensively and correctly teaching it to others? Furthermore, Subhuti, this Dharma category is inconceivable and incomparable, and one should know that its ripening result is also inconceivable." It also says, "Whoever writes, causes to be written, reads, hears, or holds this Dharma category," thereby one can also know the benefits of others. Although this is so, different results will also appear according to the goodness or badness of the reader's motivation. In the past, in a remote border area, a householder placed a shrine on the roof. When he himself went to the mountains, he saw many people with the appearance of Shravaka Arhats gathered in front of the shrine. Because he did not believe it,

There was nothing there. He gained firm faith in the Dharma and offered a horse as a religious donation. Later, he invited another object of offering, thinking that it would be nice if another horse would come, and this thought arose continuously in his mind. When the patron looked down from the mountain, he saw a large horse in front of him. Therefore, the complete purity of thought is very important. Reading scriptures with a pure mind benefits both oneself and others. Sins are eliminated and strength is increased. Misfortune is purified and obstacles are pacified. The deities of the white side protect. When non-humans hear it, their continuum is also liberated. One's own mind also retains many things heard. Renunciation arises towards samsara. Faith arises in the Three Jewels. It becomes the cause for relying on a virtuous spiritual friend and entering the path of Dharma. Pacifying internal demons, harm from fire, water, wild animals, etc., there are countless benefits. Sixth, holding is the nature of the non-forgetting dharani. It does not depend on the collection and arrangement of scriptures, the control of the senses, day and night, walking and dwelling, the difference between homeland and foreign land. By the power of wisdom, one can recite the expressed content without obstruction, so even if one is separated from the scriptures, one will not become exhausted of merit. In particular, the breath in the words of expression merges with the mind, so blessings are integrated, and it is also easy to generate understanding of the expressed content. After fully understanding, one can obtain the non-forgetting dharani. At the time of the first council, although the scriptures were not written on the surface of letters, the Arhats, when compiling the three baskets, were able to say, "Thus have I heard, at one time..." This is also a manifestation of both words and meaning entering the mind. Although this is the realm of activity of the noble ones who have attained special qualities of abandonment and realization, even if only the part of the words enters the mind, it can enable his continuum to obtain special understanding and experience. Therefore, whether day or night, at any time, one can recite fluently, which is holding or understanding in the mind, and has immeasurable benefits. Seventh, explaining is to plant the seeds of virtuous deeds and liberation in the minds of others, and for oneself, it also becomes a Uposatha that avoids transgressions. Moreover, the wise ones who are proficient in the three baskets, through the wisdom of exposition, those who want to explain the essence of the scriptures...
