The Thirty Verses and the Introduction to Grammar. If one studies the distinctions between new and old terms but does not become familiar with correct terminology, the meanings of words in the scriptures and treatises will be confused. For example, even the single letter "ཀ་" can refer to the Buddha's teachings, a pillar, a ditch in a field, the hardship of labor, a belt, poor understanding, the tone of a sound, a涩 taste, and so on. Due to the differences in prefixes and suffixes, the meanings of words can become very confused. Therefore, one should learn to write letters, because letters are the embodiment of the Buddha, and there is immeasurable benefit in learning their form. As stated in the Sutra of the Gathering of Intentions: "The lord of Lanka, the emanation of form is different, the image of speech appears as letters, and the emanation of letters is like this: name, origin, shape, nature, sound, action, gate, name, and the suchness of the basis of letters. One will see and understand those secret and supreme places. Therefore, one will become skilled and liberated in all dharmas." Thus it is said in the sutra. Regarding its form and aspects, there are ten characteristics, eight cherished points, head, arm, drip, upward pull, downward pull, eye, etc. Each has three distinctions of three characteristics, totaling twenty-one dharmas. The ear has three, gu-gu has three, ra-subscript has two, and ya-subscript has three, totaling sixteen branch dharmas. There are three general dharmas, plus migration, roughly forty dharmas in total. One should be proficient in the method of detailed distinction using fine lines by Khyunpo Yutri from the lineage of the great translator Kawa Paltseg, and be familiar with the works such as Rospo's Compilation. Even if one does not fully understand, one should pay attention to the head not drooping like a goat, the arm conforming to a right angle, the drip not falling, the upward pull being upright, the downward pull being delicate, the eye not protruding, and the head of the subscript being the same as the body, from the aspect of the form itself. Through the application of wisdom, letters are the embodiment of skillful means, therefore, receiving its blessings, there is also a story of becoming the foremost among the wise. Previously, in the land where wisdom arises, there was a teacher who built scriptures, studying the creation of letters, and when sleeping on the roof, from the center of the full moon, a vowel arose.

Just as seeing clear letters appear on paper and merge into oneself, one becomes extremely skilled in writing. If one becomes skilled in calligraphy in this way, one will also become proficient in the ease of using a pen. Therefore, one will also become intelligent in various different scripts such as Lacha, Wartul, Sangling, Marko la, Kashmir, and so on. In this way, if one acts according to the Dharma, making a vow each morning to copy a certain number of pages and verses from the Kangyur and Tengyur scriptures, then having a human body becomes meaningful. Even if one only writes a small volume, it will be beneficial to oneself temporarily, and through the protection of the virtuous ones, it will fall into the hands of a karmically connected person and become a great matter, which is also evident. In general, for all virtuous actions, the preliminary practice is generating Bodhicitta, the main practice is being without clinging to reality, and the concluding practice is being sustained by dedication and aspiration, then it becomes a cause for definite goodness, a part of liberation. If it is not sustained by these, it is only a part of merit, only a temporary result of higher realms. Therefore, being sustained by the Three Jewels also applies to those below. Second is offering. The Gandavyuha Sutra says: "All the Buddhas of the past and in the ten directions, who dwell in the worlds, I will make offerings to." Therefore, the Buddhas who have passed into Nirvana in the realm of profound, peaceful, free from elaboration, and great peace, the Dharmakaya of the Buddhas whose elaborations have subsided into the Dharmadhatu, and their ten bhumis and five paths, the especially distinguished qualities of realization of the noble ones, the complete offering stupas and the light of the marks and signs manifested as the images of the Dharmas of the Bodhipaksa, the scriptures such as the twelve branches of scripture which are the vessels of the truths of cessation and the path, and the Buddhas who are now living and residing in the endless and limitless realms of the world, and their sons, the noble Sangha who possess the twofold confidence of wisdom and liberation, are truly wonderful objects of offering. How to offer? Shantideva said: "May showers of jewels, flowers, and the like, constantly fall upon stupas and images." Even just making it an object of aspiration has immeasurable benefits, what need is there to mention if it is actually accomplished? Formerly, King Ashoka
