In the Sutra of Gathering, it says: Good disciples who have respect for the lama, those should always rely on learned lamas. Why? Because the qualities of learning arise from that. So, how should one listen? There are three faults of the vessel, such as: mouth down, bottom with a hole, like poison. Similarly, six stains should be removed. In the Treatise on Discriminating Wisdom, it says: Pride and disbelief, not seeking meaning, outward distraction, inward discouragement, are the stains of listening. It means that, for the pride arising from lineage, appearance, and wealth, the disbelief arising from associating with the lama, not seeking the meaning of the words and meanings of the Dharma, the mind being distracted outward, and the inward contempt for the path of liberation, the antidote to these is, from gathering, joy, respect, and faith are the best preparation. Clearing away obstacles and afflictions, being liberated from stains. Manifesting entry for the benefit of beings, with this wisdom reaching the other shore. What those brave ones practice, that is what should be listened to. It means that one should maintain mindfulness. As stated in the Avatamsaka Sutra, one should regard the lama as a doctor, the Dharma as medicine, oneself as a patient, and diligently care for the patient like a nurse, generating four cognitions to listen. That is, the Dharma spoken by the teacher, in the form of vowels and consonants, visualizing oneself as Noble Manjushri, Vajrapani, Tara, etc., dissolving into one's heart, this is the key. Listening to the Dharma in this way, the benefits of hearing the Dharma are immeasurable. As Gyalwa Longchenpa said: Even beings who hear the sound of the Dharma drum are liberated from the lower realms, what need is there to mention those who listen? It means that in this way, one can reduce the obscurations in one's mindstream, feel regret for the mistakes made in the past, generate renunciation and detachment, understand the path of the two truths, plant the seeds of liberation and omniscience in one's mindstream, and also remember these in the bardo. For example, like the yaksha herder, the spirits with hair like needles, poison, etc., and cruel and fierce people like King Ashoka, King Ajatashatru, Angulimala, etc., also relied on hearing the true Dharma to turn away from great evil deeds and turn towards the path of liberation. And some, in the state of the five perfections,

While gathered in assembly, I say that I have heard this Dharma once before and do not need it now. If selling it to others, thinking that what was heard before is enough, merely holding this view in mind without considering whether one has understood the words and meaning of that Dharma in one's own mind, one believes that even the benefit of hearing the Dharma will sever cause and effect, which is a manifestation of realization. Like this, rather than extensively knowing the qualities of learning common to both internal and external subjects such as sound, logic, crafts, etc., hearing the Dharma is more joyful and beneficial. As it is recorded in the Jataka tales: The young prince was so devoted to hearing the Dharma that he was willing to offer priceless garments as a gift for the Dharma. Upon hearing this story, an ordinary person bound by all sorts of fetters developed great greed. Without understanding anything, he learned a verse (Sanskrit: śloka) from another that contained the names of the "Three Jewels." Then he said to the prince, "I am also a teacher of the Dharma." Although the prince knew that he did not understand anything, because that verse contained the names of the "Three Jewels," he developed great faith and was willing to listen to that fool recite a verse, and even willing to give up his own body as an offering for the Dharma. Therefore, one should rely on virtuous spiritual friends and virtuous companions, and listen to the Dharma in all circumstances. One can even regard someone who is slightly more intelligent than oneself as a spiritual friend and strive to listen to the Dharma. As it is said in the Jataka tales: "Even crossing a fire and the edge of a razor, one should seek the sacred Dharma until death." Fifth, Reading: The sacred Dharma, the nature of the Three Jewels, the essence of the two truths of cessation and the path, are the two teachings of scripture and realization. Its image resides in the form of letters, therefore the books that gather letters are the treasury of the teachings, the source of the twelve divisions of scripture. Through the sound and meaning of the letters, even though our teacher is not alive, the actual teachings can still be heard now. And its primary cause comes from the collection of the consciousness and sense faculties of individuals. As it is said in the Manjushri Magical Net Sutra: A (Tibetan: ཨ, Sanskrit Devanagari: अ, Sanskrit Romanization: a, Chinese literal meaning: A) is the most supreme of all letters, it is a sacred letter of great meaning. It arises from within, without birth, transcending expression in words.
