May all roughness be eliminated, and may everything go smoothly and peacefully. When sending this offering, may there be no obstacles or hindrances. May your negative karma be exhausted. In order to fulfill the aspiration of going to the happy realms and higher states, please apply yourselves to good thoughts. This was said by Dzogchenpa Rangjung Dorje. End of the Twenty-seventh Chapter of the Collection of Sayings. Twenty-eighth Chapter of the Collection of Sayings. A Letter to Pilgrims, entitled "A Cluster of Pure Intentions." A Letter to Pilgrims, called "A Cluster of Pure Intentions." O Omniscient One, the supreme physician who uproots the thorns of existence! I bow to the assembly that possesses both awareness and liberation, the undeceiving Dharma spoken by you. You, the practitioners of Kham (an area in present-day Sichuan Province), have a great longing for pilgrimage, but your virtuous practices are destroyed by external circumstances, and the storms of negative karma arise. If enlightenment could be attained merely by seeing sacred places, then at this time, the Vajra Throne (Bodh Gaya) in India would be held by non-Buddhists and heretics. If you say that you have no faith in them, then in front of the Jowo (Shakyamuni Buddha statue), those who expound on sacred places and objects, have you not seen them reborn as pretas (hungry ghosts)? This is because their thoughts and actions are not in harmony. Having sincere faith in sacred places, and having the attitude of watching a spectacle, both carry the danger of making mistakes. Those who use the offerings of devotees for their own enjoyment are not on pilgrimage, but are accumulating negative karma. Especially the Akus (elder brothers) from Kham, and those great meditators who travel to distant lands, once they embark on a long journey, not only do they kill beings under their feet, but they also kill animals for food. Quarrels and battles, the fire of hatred blazes, and the armor of patience is thrown to the wind. Stealing and extortion, taking what is not given, approaching the opposite of generosity. Various traveling companions break their vows, and abandon their discipline like ashes. They embrace the three actions of the body, and interrupt the practice of prostrations and circumambulations. They lie in order to seek wealth, and sow discord before and after gambling. On the wide and narrow paths, harsh words increase. They cover up the fatigue of the long journey with idle chatter. They approach and cultivate the four negative actions of speech, and their recitations and Dharma practices become perfunctory. Diligence is directed towards the wrong path. When they see temples and the Three Jewels, they develop greed for ornaments and offerings, and hatred for the harsh words of the temple administrators. Walking

When the road is filled with rain and blizzards, And enemies, lawsuits, diseases, robbers, and thieves arise, When the whirlwind of negative karma rages, One becomes disillusioned with the Three Jewels and Dharma protectors, And steps onto the precipice of wrong views. The three paths of mental action, And the thieves of various conceptual thoughts, Become the adversaries of meditation and wisdom. Thus, disparaging the six perfections, And engaging in the ten non-virtuous actions, Acting in secret where one cannot be seen. The unprincipled and habitual ministers, The deceitful merchants who crave profit, The hardships of Khampa pilgrims, And the meditators who have not grasped the essence of practice, All of these are devoured by (afflictions). Those who frequent dangerous places, If they have not first tamed their own minds, On the path of the generation and completion stages, Without even grasping the edge of the warmth signs of the five: warmth, peak, forbearance, and supreme mundane qualities, They seek food, leg bells, and hand drums. Fearing and trembling before obstructive demons, While being completely entangled by unobstructed demons. Openly boasting to the demons of joy and elation, Yet shrinking back from the demons that cause discouragement, While seeking alcohol and travel provisions, It is ridiculous to say, "Bring meat, offer blood!" After the experience of shamatha has reached perfection, And one awakens experience in vipassanā, Those who can cross the perilous path of equanimity, Perhaps there are none among the Chöd practitioners of today. If one can attain Buddhahood by sleeping in charnel grounds, Then the shepherds who sleep in desolate mountains all their lives Would be close to attaining the rainbow body. All of that is the conduct of fools. The obstructing spirits and demons are all within one's own mind, There is no place more dangerous than a charnel ground. Do you not know that the zombies of the eight worldly concerns Do not have gathering and dispersal? If one can sever here, then one is a Chöd practitioner. One is the best among those who have accomplished asceticism. Therefore, when making pilgrimages and circumambulations, Be sure to maintain mindfulness with carefulness. Especially when virtuous individuals, And meditators go on pilgrimage, They gain autonomy over the two bodhicittas, They do not discriminate between the joys and sorrows of equanimity, They withstand external circumstances with the armor of patience. Even if one's own body is beaten and struck a hundred times, It is like striking the four elements with a stick, With the asceticism of feeling nothing, When one's courage becomes confidence, One should travel to the twenty-four great pilgrimage sites, etc., As explained in the tantric scriptures. Without even touching the edge of the path of accumulation, One is worse than a monkey.
