Merely adhering to a certain religious tradition does not qualify someone as a practitioner of either the Mahayana or Hinayana. If one is ignorant of these three teachings and has not cultivated even a single virtuous quality of the path within their being, then no matter what religion or sect they claim to follow, they cannot be considered a practitioner of the Mahayana or Hinayana. Furthermore, they cannot even be considered a non-Buddhist, as they lack contemplation and analysis of the causes and effects of both higher realms and definitive goodness. Therefore, anyone who has entered the path must at least understand the distinctions between the Mahayana and Hinayana. Without this understanding, there is no reason to trust someone simply because they adhere to a certain religion. As it is said in the "Distinctions" section: "Most practitioners nowadays do not practice the three trainings, therefore they are not of the Paramita Vehicle; they do not possess empowerment and stages, therefore they are not of the Vajrayana teachings; they do not understand the Vinaya Pitaka, therefore they are not of the Shravaka Vehicle either. Yet they claim to be practitioners, alas, to which doctrine do they belong?" As stated above. Our teacher, with skillful means, did not impose his own doctrine from the beginning. Instead, he practiced austerities and meditation in accordance with those who understood non-Buddhist doctrines and were not completely ignorant, thereby subjugating the views of other sects. However, he himself, through the stainless wisdom he had cultivated since beginningless time, ultimately manifested the state of Buddhahood. Although he wished to lead all sentient beings to this state, because beings tend to look at superficial appearances, he gradually led them along the path by presenting mind, mental factors, objects, and forms as merely nominal designations. Thus, the Vaibhashika school arose, with its extremely coarse view that objects and sense faculties are truly existent, and that consciousness arises from them. However, by distinguishing the self, which non-Buddhists consider to be independent, autonomous, and permanent, beings gradually gained the potential to attain liberation. Among them, the Kashmir Vaibhashikas and others believe that conditioned phenomena are impermanent, disintegrating in an instant, and that the self is merely a conceptual construct, not truly existent. Therefore, their school is superior to the former. The Sutrantikas, on the other hand, believe that coarse continuums such as forms exist, but the continuum of consciousness is not truly existent.
