Attaching with awareness, thinking that it has not deteriorated, is the view and meditation of mental discrimination. It is because it is not separate from the mind of the four ever-present ones and the two others, which are the mind's functions. If you consider awareness to be the result of mindfulness, then when abiding in the definitive meaning, mindfulness becomes the object of knowledge and awareness becomes the subject of knowledge, and you will not be able to eliminate the obscurations of the two aspects of practice. However, for those who have the image of the definitive meaning, who have conceptual mindfulness, that is possible. Because the mindfulness that is to be observed and the awareness that is the observer appear as two separate entities of intelligence. As it is said: From the former, those who have minds without awareness, listening, thinking, and meditating, like water in a broken vase, do not abide in mindfulness. Because the three, listening, thinking, and meditating, are established as the object of mindfulness. Furthermore, even if there is a continuity of mindfulness, at that time, when it arises as two parts of the transformation of the abode, the way to distinguish subtle differences and good and bad differences is: Because the analytical wisdom of discrimination enters into the mindfulness of the natural state, subtle differences and good and bad differences become obvious. It seems that without understanding the mindfulness of the nature of reality, one is identifying whether one is distracted or not, whether conceptual thoughts arise or not. If the arising of conceptual thoughts is distraction, then what is called distraction is co-emergent ignorance. At that time, where is the freedom not to follow it? Therefore, not being distracted is merely the nature of mindfulness. If conceptual thoughts arise from the nature of that mindfulness, since that conceptual thought is a sudden manifestation of power, it cannot tolerate the face of mindfulness and will naturally disappear. Such disappearance is not the power of a new mindfulness, so there will not be both good and bad in one mindfulness. However, for the conventional truth, the non-conceptual that is merely not distracted is calm abiding. From that, meditation with the analytical wisdom of intelligence is insight. Since identifying the arising of conceptual thoughts as distraction, a famine of meditation will arise. Calm abiding is unmoving, insight moves like a fish. Mind abiding like a drop of water, considering freedom from elaboration to be real. That's it. In Tibet, those who disturb meditation with the distraction of mixing mental functions into equipoise, think that such is the unsurpassed view of the Great Madhyamaka, but if measured from the nature of realization, it becomes an activity called equipoise. Insight becomes a dharma of mental engagement.
