High mountains cannot satisfy the needs of the land, just as cultivating in a place without land and expecting to reap a harvest. Why is that? Because one must definitively and unequivocally ascertain the way in which mind itself abides in the realm of the Dharmakaya, without error or confusion. Having gained certainty in abiding, stability, and liberation within it, if one enters the ultimate of spontaneous accomplishment, since awareness inherently possesses the three kayas, there is no need for the initial manifestation of the Sambhogakaya and pure lands. Instead, it is determined in the present as the path appearance, coarse elements are exhausted, and one is transformed into a light body. Therefore, like this, ignorant and foolish individuals do not understand the way of abiding of the nature, and they treat Tögal as ninefold activities, nor do they understand the key to making wind-mind naturally purify. With perseverance and determination, they greedily hope until the end of their lives, expecting temporary appearances and the transformation of the body into rainbow light, engaging in meaningless and futile efforts. Nowadays, there are many such people in these snowy mountains, but those who strive on the path combined with their own perseverance are very few. Furthermore, the tenet of Lhazé, its basis is the reality of things, not abiding in the extremes of samsara and nirvana, existence and non-existence, permanence and annihilation. It is not produced by any cause or condition, therefore it spontaneously arises as the three doors of liberation. Without adorning the nature of knowledge with tenets, without being obscured by evil views, practicing in the state of natural purity, thereby swallowing distraction and the distracter. Regarding this, three reasons for self-liberation should be established: Primordial liberation, not relying on the view, meditation, conduct, and result of the lower vehicles, not completely dependent on the wish to hope for when to be liberated. Self-liberation, the realm of sentient beings is the nature of the Sugatagarbha, possessing temporary stains. Because they have not grasped the guru's instructions, they are mixed with afflictions, and confusion has not transformed into dharmata. Essence liberation, abiding in the nature that has never wandered in samsara from the beginning, entering into the nature, liberation in the state of non-action, great perfection, is like a garuda growing wings in an egg. The three powers are perfected in the body, the eggshell falling to the ground and cutting through the sky at the same time, just as other birds do not possess the lineage of the garuda, other awarenesses do not possess the awareness of the garuda.

In short, Dzogchen does not rely on the warm signs of the paths and bhumis of reasoning. As it is said, in the Great Potency: "Sentient beings and Buddhas are inseparable; how can they be transformed by the path?" This doctrine is the special secret of Dzogchen, difficult to comprehend even for minds clinging to conceptual thought, and a place difficult to realize even for those who claim to have entered this path. What is the reason? Because they say that the meaning of the Tathagatagarbha, the Ornament of Dense Array, Nirvana, and other final turnings of the wheel, as well as the tantras such as the Sambhuti, Hevajra, Compendium of Samvara, and the Explanatory Tantra Vajramala, which are similar to direct teachings, are understood in other ways from the Lankavatara Sutra, and they think that those are the Buddha's intentions. They do not distinguish between the Tathagatagarbha nature, which exists in the continuum of sentient beings together with adventitious stains, and the wisdom of the nature to be realized. These people, who merely claim to hold their own doctrine, abandon the validity related to view, scripture, and reason, and rely on foolish meditation, and are confused about the doctrine of the all-knowing Victorious One. Here, when one becomes emptiness, regarding the validity of determining the distracted state as dharmata, there are two types: the validity of the dharmata of reasoning and the validity of the dharmata of appearance. Here, it is the former. Because the subject does not abide in the nature of delusion, the distracted state becomes dharmata; because dharmata does not abide in nihilistic views, the distracted state becomes dharmata; because it does not abide in existence and non-existence, the distracted state becomes dharmata; because it does not abide in one and many, the distracted state becomes dharmata; because the basis of sectarianism is exhausted, the distracted state becomes dharmata; because the bias of view and meditation is purified, the distracted state becomes dharmata; because it is free from all the basis of delusion, the distracted state becomes dharmata; for the continuous great awareness, the distracted state becomes dharmata; because the awareness of thinking is purified, the distracted state becomes dharmata; because there is no basis for distraction, the distracted state becomes dharmata; because it is as vast as space, the distracted state becomes dharmata; because there is no day and night, the distracted state becomes dharmata; because meditation and non-meditation are purified, the distracted state becomes dharmata; because the knowable does not have its own nature, the distracted state becomes dharmata. Thus, the wisdom that exhausts dharmata is beyond expression, so realize it.
