The mind of ignorance is when one does not see the treasure and does not understand it in one's heart. Having wandered off from the east, he was caught by the magician by his genitals and killed. The giant said: The giant who has lost his memory and awareness, was killed by a diligent and weak man. There is no enemy more formidable than this distraction, I have never seen such a skilled deceiver. Having said that, he died. Just like that, when a meditative yogi is distracted, the rope of memory is cut, and even if one is skilled in the five sciences, one will be led to the city of illusion by the thief of inner knowledge without realizing it. When Rong Lotsawa went to the front of Haspo Ri, he said: This pile of heads piled high, reveals the nature of a mountain king, thereby deceiving you. This shows that hearing and thinking without the wisdom of meditation cannot cut through the grounds and paths. He does not have self-generated conceptual thoughts, because he is especially loving to others, therefore he gives instructions. Because the dharma of mindfulness is very diligent, it can suppress afflictions, and in this life one can also obtain vast merits of happiness. From the beginning of the mindfulness of the four close placements in the accumulation path, to the power of mindfulness in the path of joining, the first of the seven branches of enlightenment in the path of seeing, and the seventh of the eight noble paths in the path of cultivation is also mindfulness, therefore in order to manifest all the qualities of the five paths. In particular, the nature of mindfulness naturally abides equally in the dharma of meditation, and is not swayed by excitement or dullness, this is called the samadhi of union of calm and insight. If one exerts too much effort, the mind will be distracted, and if one lacks the antidote of mindfulness, one will lose insight. In short, all the virtuous dharmas that exist in the paths of accumulation and joining from this point onward are fabricated, and their nature is also accompanied by effort, therefore they are called fabricated mindfulness, and are established in the path of ordinary beings, and are distinguished sequentially. From the treasury of precious instructions it says: The initial practitioner should not be distracted by fabrication, the subsequent learners should not be distracted by the nature of reality, having become accustomed to it, do not be distracted by the wisdom of the appearance of mindfulness, when one becomes emptiness there is no distraction and no one who is distracted, when stability reaches its end the place of distraction is definitely the nature of reality, when dharma is exhausted it transcends the realm of expression.

Please grant that we may be led to such a state. Such pronouncements, which are teachings that eliminate all the colorful expressions of the path, are established by meditators as the nature of mindfulness. Thus, for those who abide, if they are of supreme intelligence, those of sudden enlightenment, the special characteristic of the Great Perfection of self-nature is that mindfulness is not placed on top of abiding, but mindfulness itself is perfected as the nature of abiding, which is an especially great quality of the ground and path. However, even so, because there are many who are difficult to be held by excellent views, karma, and merit, for those who do not understand this, if they are not guided in accordance with the way of guarding abiding with mindfulness, as others do, they will be scattered and meaningless. Therefore, there are two stages of guarding. According to the first, mindfulness itself is perfected as the nature of abiding, so there is no difference between the object of seeing and the seer. Even in times of distraction, conceptual thought itself becomes mindfulness, just as fire and heat are inseparable. Mindfulness and conceptual thought become one taste. This is the way of arising of sudden enlightenment, but there is no certainty of the qualities of the ground and path. According to the second, in the time of abiding, it is held by mindfulness. In times of distraction, mindfulness itself becomes conceptual thought, so it is subject to the power of delusion. Again, when mindfulness arises, it enters into abiding. In this way, like fighting in a contest, if you hold on with diligence, then when mindfulness becomes strong, conceptual thought is a sudden stain, so it cannot withstand the power of mindfulness, just as fire and fuel meet, or a lamp is lit in a dark room. No matter how much conceptual thought arises, it does not harm abiding in any way. The nature of conceptual thought itself merges into mindfulness, which is called the manifestation of the antidote, which is the power of intentional mindfulness. If you do not hold on with diligence, the power of mindfulness will gradually decrease, and ignorance and conceptual thought will increase, so that the more you meditate, the worse it gets. This is shown by the example of a greedy shepherd. How so? Once upon a time, there was a shepherd who was very greedy. He found a large gold nugget in a monastery in the pasture. He was so happy that he neglected the care of the livestock and forgot to eat. He held the gold nugget in his hands, moving it from right to left. Even when he saw nets and mice, he was afraid that others would steal his gold nugget. As the saying goes, "The poor have no tsampa in their hands, they mistake butter for tsampa balls, and bad omens appear on the teeth of others."
