Showing the way of needing mindfulness and awareness: At the time of the Buddha's Nirvana, the disciples made four requests. They asked, "After the Blessed One passes into Nirvana, who shall we take as our teacher? What shall we take as the doctrine? How shall we subdue the group of six? And how shall we arrange the teachings at the time of the compilation of the scriptures?" The Blessed One replied, "After I have completely passed into Nirvana, you should take mindfulness and awareness as your teacher, and the completely pure discipline as your doctrine. The group of six does not need to be subdued; they will go to self-liberation. At the time of compiling my teachings, at the beginning, add the words 'Thus have I heard at one time' as an introduction. In the end, praise the words spoken by the Blessed One, and add the word 'rejoicing' as a conclusion." Thus he spoke. Therefore, saying 'Thus have I heard at one time' in the introduction ensures that there will be no omissions in the repetition of the Buddha's teachings. This is because, at the time of listening, the listeners have abandoned the three faults of the vessel, the six stains, and the five faults of non-retention. In particular, this arises from relying on the qualities of having obtained the dharani of non-forgetfulness. The essence of dharani is mindfulness. The noble Manjushri said, 'Dharani is said to be the non-loss of mindfulness, the non-distraction of thought, the non-obscuration of intelligence, the manifestation of wisdom, and the knowing of the various differences in the words of all dharmas.' Even for the mere act of begging for alms, continuous mindfulness and awareness are necessary. If one goes to places where dogs are eaten, etc., one will obtain the great sin of burning the minds of oneself and others, so these actions should be avoided. This is extensively explained in the sutras. As it is said in the Cloud of Jewels Sutra: 'Son of good family, if a Bodhisattva sees a small root of virtue, or possesses a small root of virtue, he makes a vow to beg for alms for the benefit of sentient beings. When he goes to a village, city, or suburb for the sake of begging for alms, he should maintain very close mindfulness, his conduct should be dignified, his senses should not be agitated, not be rude, his senses should be subdued, his gaze should be kept at the distance of a yoke, and he should focus on virtuous dharmas, begging for alms with mindfulness.'

Then he goes out. If he goes out for alms, then he gradually takes alms. He does not enter those villages that are as large and tall as sala trees of the Brahmin caste, or villages that are as large and tall as sala trees of the royal caste, or villages that are as large and tall as sala trees of householders, or wealthy villages, but always starts from one side and practices alms until that matter is accomplished. And, from that alms, one part is set aside for those who practice like Brahma, the second part is set aside for those who suffer, the third part is set aside for sentient beings who have fallen into wrongdoing, and the fourth part is eaten by oneself, etc., to be eaten in moderation, and with the thought of nourishing worms, mindfulness, etc. Likewise, alms is not with the mind of a thief or robber. The necessity of giving is: O Light Protector, you should seek alms thinking of all sentient beings, seek food when there is no food, and go for alms in order to eliminate attachment to the pills of others, bless the empty village, and let you enter the village. The necessity and basis of what is said should also be remembered. In general, the actions of body and speech are transformed by the mind. The mind controlled by afflictions is like an elephant drunk with alcohol. At that time, it is not just looking for an opportunity, but if the tamer of mindfulness and awareness strikes the head with an iron hook and ties it with a good nose rope, then he can bear the burden of all the practices of the precepts and vows from the three baskets to the ocean of tantras, enter the unobstructed path, and thus touch the state of liberation and omniscience. As it is said: On the ground of conduct, it is said: If the elephant of the mind is let loose, it will only cause the harm of uninterrupted hell. If the elephant of the mind is tightly tied with the rope of mindfulness, all fears will disappear, and all virtues will come into hand. So it is said. In particular, the essence of meditation is not separate from mindfulness, therefore, the path of peace beyond the world for bodhisattvas, namely the four worldly meditations and the four formless absorptions, and cessation.
