Mutual dependence makes the ability stronger and stronger. As an antidote to this, it is said: If those sentient beings are not truly objects of focus, who would scold me, speak unpleasant words, say rude words, or strike with stones, sticks, and weapons? All actions are like illusions. Nourishing, being nourished, relying on the sky. "I, sentient beings, life, travelers, nourishers," etc., as it is said, one should regard actions and illusions as characteristics. Naturally, praise or disparagement by ignorant beings is not because they see merit and know how to praise. Nor is it certain that they disparage because they recognize faults, but merely unpleasant, arbitrary verbal sounds. Mostly, it is an intolerable inner turmoil towards the wealth and prosperity of others. Some Bodhisattvas, when entering the practice, hope that servants and friends will enter the Dharma gate, or when they are embraced by the profound rituals of the Mahayana and Mantras, because the desires of others are controlled by others, they utter various mockeries, which is the story of the patience of the righteous. In particular, our teacher did not entice anyone with wealth to make them follow, nor did he confuse anyone with mantras. But when the beings to be tamed are ripe and the appearance is under control, in the Sutra of Skillful Means, it says: When a Bodhisattva practices the conduct of a Bodhisattva, in order to fully ripen those young women, the Bodhisattva accepts service, and the Bodhisattva dwells in the lotus, ripening forty-two thousand women. It is also said that, like the daughter of a low-caste person showing attachment to the handsome Ananda, (Ananda) was disguised as a Bhikshuni, and the people of Shravasti mocked him, which is not in accordance with reality. Or, again, like Vimalakirti of Vaishali, who was tamed by skillful means, as a householder, his courage was inconceivable, his biography was immeasurable, and even the two supreme ones could not match him. Such a work of taming immeasurable beings cannot be known by ordinary people. Therefore, Bodhisattvas must especially generate the courage of patience in this situation of being slandered, otherwise, sentient beings will be impoverished, and the helpless will be deprived of refuge, and some will think themselves great.

Just as the example is cited, "Claiming to be holy, piling up precious scriptures, not seeing the Mon women, only seeing cat's eye stones," some people, without devout faith, only show off how much Dharma they have obtained. They hide those Lamas from whom they have gained the qualities of renunciation and realization, regarding them as inferior, and instead go to fortune-telling. For them, this becomes a great obstacle to attaining accomplishments, so one should generate even greater compassion and firmly uphold the vow of patience without expecting anything in return. Similarly, patience towards the Dharma comes from remembering the Three Jewels, and the patience to willingly accept difficulties comes from remembering the lineage of past lives and the biographies of holy beings, so it is very important to guard mindfulness. Similarly, the essence of diligence is also the mindfulness or desire to be manifestly joyful in the work to be undertaken. When the Buddha was about to pass away, he held Ananda's hand and said, "My treasure of the Dharma should be guarded by desire, diligence, and carefulness!" The desire mentioned here is to repeatedly remember the ultimate goal of the work; diligence is the practice; carefulness is the action. Why is that? Because all the precepts established by the Buddha must become aids to the mind of renunciation. As it is said in the Mindfulness Sutra: "Monks, in the mountains, in caves, in cemeteries, in open places, meditate on piles of grass and so on, do not dwell carelessly, otherwise you will regret it at the time of death, this is my final instruction to you." If mindfulness is lost, diligence and carefulness lose their executor. Even if one has courage like King Ashoka, or like the three generations of ancestors and descendants, as if the sky were collapsing and the earth were sinking, one needs to use the thought of not being afraid, not retreating, and not being satisfied to counter laziness and encourage oneself to enter the path of practice, this thought is mindfulness. Without mindfulness, the work will become distant and endless, and either be hindered by enemies, demons, thieves, or the cause of death, and will not be completed. Therefore, all those who lose mindfulness fall into the abyss of laziness. In particular, the Dharma of practitioners needs to maintain mindfulness in all four postures.
