Not to mention the activities of hearing, thinking, and meditating, even worldly affairs cannot be accomplished. For all the affairs of samsara, one loses meaning due to forgetfulness, loses possessions due to forgetfulness, experiences regret afterward due to forgetfulness, becomes mentally deranged, has confused consciousness, is misled, and cannot explain the meaning of words, etc. All these are due to the loss of mindfulness. If we look at the path to practice from the perspective of Nirvana, first, those who do not remember the difficulty of obtaining leisure and endowment will not have the opportunity to connect with the Dharma. Even if they accidentally enter the path of Dharma, they will quickly deviate from the right path because they do not have mindfulness and awareness of the precepts established by the Buddha. Death is also completely forgotten; once death is forgotten, everything one does is distracted by the affairs of this life. At that time, the neutral mind forgets the cause and effect of the ten non-virtuous actions to be abandoned and the ten virtuous actions to be practiced, neither thinking of the faults of samsara nor the benefits of liberation. One becomes engrossed in noise and household affairs, and arrogance arises, thereby losing and forgetting the benefits of future lives, just like a fool drunk with alcohol. How is this so? The Sutra of Glorious Virtues says: For example, when a person is drunk and becomes violent, his mind can neither find his home nor find his way, and he has no concept of parents, wife, children, or daughters, and does not even remember the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. Due to the power of intoxication, even if he is in a cemetery, he does not feel fear, thinking: Who can make me afraid? Is it a god, a dragon, or a yaksha? Similarly, those who are intoxicated by desire, confused by dwelling in a household, and whose minds are intoxicated by distraction, do not seek the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, do not remember generosity, and do not seek to be reborn in heaven, become a king, or be reborn in a Buddha-field, but only wander in samsara, suffering in the hells, animal realms, and the world of Yama. As the sutra says, because one forgets the future life, one does not remember to give alms. Even if one has immeasurable wealth, one does not remember to transform it into merit, so one can only go empty-handed at the time of death. The precepts established by the Teacher

Even with a pure land like that of the Bhagavan (Tibetan: ོམ་ལྡན་འདས་), one may still be born as a hungry ghost due to the karma of miserliness. Therefore, once mindfulness arises towards the merits of hearing, the power of wisdom will grow stronger and stronger regarding material giving, from giving, great giving, to complete giving. By remembering the various aspects of the Bodhisattva vows and mantra vows, one can also overcome the weariness of guiding others onto the path of Dharma. Even if one sees or hears fearful places, if one remembers, "I must be a person of the Great Vehicle," one can give them fearless protection in many ways. If one is not capable by one's own power, compassion will arise, and one will bear the immeasurable burden of suffering. If mindfulness is lost, there will be a situation where one claims to be a person of the Great Vehicle, but has neither compassion nor realization. Some say they have realization, but cannot generate compassion. This indicates that although they have understanding, realization has not arisen. Father Dampa said, "If compassion does not arise, realization will not arise. Fish live in water, not in drought." This saying is very important. Similarly, the deterioration of discipline also arises from not remembering shame and awareness. If one remembers these, one will protect the three doors out of fear of the world's criticism, and out of shame of deceiving the Khenpo and Acharya, thereby abandoning unfavorable actions, or accumulating favorable virtuous dharmas, and guarding the contaminated vows that benefit sentient beings, thereby being fearless. Due to the loss of mindfulness, even a monk like Stainless Light (Tibetan: དགེ་སློང་དྲི་མེད་འོད་ལྟ་) was deceived by a prostitute with drugs and mantras, and his discipline was broken. Later, when he regained his mindfulness, he felt intense remorse and cried out to the monks. They also urged him to go to Manjushri to eliminate his sins, just as Manjushri advised. He also went to Manjushri. Manjushri then led him to the Teacher. The Teacher showed him the characteristics of ultimate emptiness, enabling him to realize the truth. Like this sutra and the Angulimala Sutra, although there is no need to establish a system of definitive and provisional meanings, in the end, if the teachings are complete, one can understand the defects of abandoning and cultivating antidotes, and the transformation of the nature of the three vows through pure wisdom. Therefore, the basis of all three vehicles is discipline, the basis of discipline is the mind, and for the mind, there is a need to distinguish the rituals of abandoning and cultivating.
