Just as it is said, "For as long as samsara exists, for that long, accumulations such as merit will increase as aids to enlightenment." Therefore, even if individuals who enter the path of Dharma are equal, the difference between those who diligently accumulate merit and purify obscurations and those who do not is like the difference between a caravan leader obtaining jewels and a turtle falling asleep. The latter is like: The distance between the sky and the earth is very long, the far shore of the ocean and the near shore of the river are very long, the distance between the two mountains in the east and west is even longer, and the distance between the Dharma of ordinary people and the Dharma of the holy is even longer. Therefore, know that it has the characteristic of going from light to darkness. Ninth, thinking: For the five Dharmas such as listening just mentioned, it is necessary to analyze them with pure wisdom arising from thought. Because listening and reading, etc., without any understanding or analysis of the meaning of words, are like the words of a talking bird. Furthermore, if the mind is distracted elsewhere and mindfulness is not placed nearby, then such practice of Dharma is fruitless. The Bodhicharyavatara says: All the fruits of body and speech are not realized due to poor conduct. Recitation and all asceticism, even if practiced for a long time, if done with the mind distracted elsewhere, then the wise say that these are meaningless. If someone does not understand this weakness of the mind, which is the chief of Dharma, even if they want to attain happiness and destroy suffering, then they are just wandering around in vain. Therefore, one must grasp and guard one's own mind well. If one does not understand the asceticism of guarding the mind, then what is the use of many ascetic practices? Therefore, it is clear that analyzing the meaning of words with such profound wisdom gathers virtuous Dharma like the ocean, and there will be no mistakes in what to take and what to abandon. In particular, whether listening to, reading, holding, explaining, or reciting sutras and treatises, etc., if analysis arising from thought is integrated, a special understanding will arise. If one cannot analyze by one's own power, then asking virtuous friends and those who are more intelligent than oneself will cause one's own wisdom to grow like the waxing moon. For example, taking the first turning of the wheel of Dharma as an example, monks, you should know suffering, you should abandon the origin, you should realize cessation.

Therefore, one should rely on the path. Reflecting on the meaning of this statement, suffering is understood as the fault of samsara. The cause of suffering is the origin, which is the nature of ignorance. If one abandons the karma accumulated by the collection of afflictions arising from the mind and mental factors, then the result, suffering, will cease. Abandoning in this way requires reliance on the truth of the path, so it is said that one should rely on the path. How does one rely on it? The "Three Hundred Verses" states: "Whoever abandons killing, stealing, unchastity, lying, and intoxicants, such as alcohol, dancing, garlands, ointments, high and wide beds, untimely food, and accepting gold and silver, is practicing the discipline that conquers the enemy of afflictions. With the Pratimoksha vows, like the moon in water, one destroys the harm of death, which is the glorious empowerment of perfect Bodhi." This shows the extensive display of the training in higher discipline. Similarly, one should also understand the middle and final turnings of the wheel of Dharma. As stated in the Abhidharmakosha: "One who dwells in discipline, is learned, and contemplates, should diligently engage in meditation." Just as generating wisdom from contemplation on all the Dharma that has been heard is a Dharma that must necessarily precede meditation. In particular, the tenet of those who read, hear, and contemplate is, as stated in the "Cessation of Disputes": "Without relying on conventions, one cannot realize the ultimate meaning." Because they want to experience peace by relying on conventions, they measure with signs, perception, inference, self-character, other-character, refutation, and validation, and by studying categories and sutras, relying on wisdom arising from contemplation, they believe that the ultimate truth is the object of sound and concept, like the teacher Chapa. However, since it is the cause of generating the wisdom of discriminating Dharma, it does not hinder the nature of reading, hearing, and contemplation. But when the result is made into the path, and in the case of Vajrayana, it becomes an obstacle to the special method of stopping the winds of the mind, and is merely its incompatible factor. Therefore, the causes for entering the Dharma are the difficulty of finding leisure and endowment, the impermanence of life, the aspects of karma and its results, the faults of samsara, the benefits of liberation, and the contemplation of these, and
