Furthermore, having transcended, one seeks the true Dharma until the very end of death. Thus it is said. Fifth is reading: The nature of the precious true Dharma, the essence of the truth of cessation and path, is the two teachings of scripture and realization. Its image abides in the form of letters, therefore the collection of these texts is the treasury of the twelve categories of scripture of the teachings of scripture, therefore by arousing it with its sounds and words, even though our teacher is not alive, the actual teachings can still be heard now, and the cause of its master is the way it arises from the aggregation of the consciousness and root consciousness of an individual. In the "Manjushri Illusion Sutra" it says: "A is the most supreme of all letters, it is the sacred letter of great meaning, arising from emptiness, without birth, abandoning expression in words, it is the best of the causes of all expression." As it is said, the mother of letters, A, which arises from the emptiness of the union of wind and mind, itself gathers from different positions of the tip of the tongue, teeth, palate, lips, etc., and gives rise to the sounds of vowels and consonants. Moreover, from the gathering of letters arises name, from the gathering of names arises word, from the gathering of words arises meaning, therefore all conditioned phenomena of the path of truth are also known from the cause of letters. From its blessings, the sound and words transcend self-nature, the realized true Dharma is transferred to the consciousness of the individual, purifying the defilements of the five aggregates and eight consciousnesses, becoming the most essential of the necessities for accomplishing Buddhahood. Even if one does not comprehend so much meaning, one should generate faith that the text itself is the essence of the gathering of all precious true Dharmas, and generate great respect, placing it on a throne with a clean silk cushion, etc., and arranging offerings. Oneself abiding in bathing and cleanliness, with refuge, bodhicitta, and recollection of the Three Jewels, the seven-branch offering, etc., as preliminaries, connecting with "Namo, the language of the gods and the language of nagas and yakshas," etc., and also thinking of them as listeners of the Dharma. Without repeating words, nor lacking words, at a moderate pace, with clear sound, the benefits of reading with a pleasant voice are immeasurable, as it says in the "Perfection of Wisdom Sutra": If someone hears this Dharma category and does not abandon it, then from that basis he generates immeasurable merit, and whoever writes the letters and then receives, holds, recites, reads, universally...

What need is there to mention extensively and correctly expounding it to others? Furthermore, Subhuti, this category of Dharma is inconceivable and incomparable. One should understand that its ripening is also inconceivable. It is said that whoever writes, causes to be written, recites, listens to, or holds this category of Dharma will also come to know the benefits of others. Although this is so, the results will vary depending on whether the reader's motivation is good or bad. Once, a householder in a remote border area placed an object of worship on the roof. When he went to the mountain, he saw many individuals dressed as Shravaka Arhats gathered in front of the object of worship. Not believing it, he returned home, but none of them were visible. He gained unwavering faith in the Dharma and offered a horse as a Dharma offering. Later, he invited another object of worship, thinking that another horse would come, and this thought constantly arose in his mind. When the patron looked from the mountain, he saw a large horse in front of him. Therefore, pure intention is extremely important. Reading scriptures with a pure intention benefits both oneself and others, eradicates sins, increases strength, eliminates misfortunes, pacifies obstacles, and is protected by the white-sided deities. When non-humans hear it, they are also liberated. One's own mind also retains much learning. It generates renunciation of samsara, generates faith in the Three Jewels, and becomes a cause for relying on virtuous friends and entering the path of Dharma. It pacifies inner demons, fire, water, wild animals, harm, and so on, and has inexhaustible benefits. Sixth, holding is the nature of unfailing memory. It does not depend on the labor of collecting scriptures, the control of the senses, day and night, walking and sitting, or the distinction between being at home or away. By the power of intelligence, one can speak unimpeded from the movement of the air of what is being said, so even when separated from the scriptures, the roots of virtue will not be exhausted. In particular, the breath within the words of expression mixes with the mind, so blessings enter, and it is easy to generate understanding of the meaning of what is being expressed. By fully understanding, one obtains the way to obtain unfailing memory. At the time of the first council, although the scriptures were not recorded in writing, the Arhats
