Saying this, although seen as a hateful enemy, he was still pitiable. The great hermit in that rock crevice, named "Glad to See," sensed this and, in order to save the animal's life, spoke these words: Alas! A butcher's heart in a base body, devoid of shame and embarrassment, not thinking of karma and its results, seeking only to fill the belly. You, who are destined for the city of the Uninterrupted Hell, committing evil deeds! Listen for a moment to the words of the hermit. In the ocean of suffering of samsara, all sentient beings are alternately parents and children. Just as you are bound by love and attachment to your parents and siblings in this life, the parents of your previous lives are now in the bodies of animals, with horns on their heads and hooves on their feet, unable to speak or understand, utterly ignorant of the nature of what to accept and reject. Because you have not understood or recognized that they have transformed into such forms, you commit such shameless acts. In particular, this sentient being now is the mother who gave birth to your body! She has passed away and taken the body of a wild animal. Therefore, for a son to eat his mother's flesh is utterly shameless and heartlessly cold. If you were to experience the suffering of the Uninterrupted Hell, how would you bear it? Therefore, listen to the words of the hermit: let this mother flee three steps, let this mother leap three steps! In place of her, I will give my body without hesitation. Use my flesh, blood, and bones as you please! Having said this, the hunter became enraged and said: "In lands not seized, you are skilled at empty talk; With bellies not torn, you are skilled at enjoying food; In tasks undone, you are skilled at abandoning; Lacking a place to dwell, you hide in rocks; Lacking a place to roam, you seek empty valleys; For someone like you to speak such words to me is utterly absurd! Karma and its results are just empty talk, who believes in such things? The killer, I, the hunter, kills, the eaters, the monks, consume. If there is a difference between the sin of eating and the sin of killing, it is utterly laughable! You who have abandoned the signs of householders, covering your faces with red and yellow robes, the butcher is the place where killing is done, the householder is the place where matters are discussed, the place where false weights and measures are set up, even the place where the heads of evil spirits and rams are burned, having reached this point, do you still say there is no karma? From this morning when the first light dawned, to now, the sun...

Until the time of old age, I have never drunk water after eating. Even if I am hungry, I will not eat human flesh. Before the arrow pierces my heart, it is better to return to my own place. After saying these words, the fierce hunter drew his bow fully. At this time, the ascetic said: Although the hunter is fierce, the ascetic does not spare his life. If you do not kill me first, how can others eat it alive? For the misconduct of the practitioner, and the Shravakas who guard the precepts, the root of the two hundred and fifty precepts, the pursuit of karma will not be in the slightest error. From the eighteen levels of hell below, to the peak of existence above, all karmic appearances are the result of karma and its fruits. Therefore, regarding such principles, I, this ascetic, am more proficient than you. To proclaim the Dharma with ignorance is the lowest of the wicked. Now, the pitiful, the object of compassion, is this innocent deer. Ask me, the ascetic, for this life, I will give my life to you, the hunter.
