The youth, residing on the top of the land-dwelling mansion, saw her from his chariot and was captivated. He welcomed her as his queen, along with her retinue of twenty thousand, and indulged in joy and pleasure. Later, the daughter of the Shakya clan's good fortune, named Riwadatta, looked out from the window. The youth threw a pearl necklace, which wrapped around the girl's neck. This scene was witnessed by the crowd, who reported it to the king. Consequently, Riwadatta was also welcomed, along with her retinue of twenty thousand. Thus, the queen's retinue totaled sixty thousand, plus the twenty thousand previously gifted by the king, making a total of eighty thousand. Together with the queen, he enjoyed the abundant qualities of desire until the age of twenty-nine. Although he perceived the appearance of desire as an illusion, he was not tainted by the fault of attachment, nor did he deviate from sacred conduct. The act of definite departure was as follows: At that time, the Buddhas of the ten directions urged him through the sound of music, saying: If there is no death and no sorrow, then become a Buddha; satisfy the thirst-stricken with nectar. Remember the supreme words of your past aspirations, and quickly manifest from this city! Hearing these words, he understood it as a sign of departure. Resolving to leave, he had the charioteer drive the chariot from the city's east gate to the eastern pleasure garden. On the way, he saw a Brahmin manifested by the gods, whiter than a conch shell. His body was emaciated and trembling, appearing aged and decrepit. He asked what this was. The charioteer replied: This god is called old age. Old age means that one will soon die. Am I also not exempt from the law of aging? The gods are also not exempt from the law of aging. Hearing these words, he felt a moment of sorrow and turned back. Similarly, on the road from the south gate, he saw people afflicted by the suffering of illness; on the road from the west gate, he saw a dead person placed on a stretcher, with the bereaved family members uttering cries of grief; on the road from the north gate, he saw monks who were peaceful, disciplined, and virtuous. These became the causes for him to remember the faults of household life and the benefits of liberation. Therefore, he turned the chariot around and returned to the city.

When he was determined to renounce the world, the king, having learned of it, began to create various dissolute pleasures for the prince. At that time, five omens of his departure from home appeared: the trees of the royal palace withered, and the king, the mother of beings, the earth mother, and others had inauspicious dreams. The diviner said that if he did not renounce the world within seven days, he would become a universal monarch. King Śuddhodana, having consulted with his brothers, surrounded the city with seven layers of iron walls and moats. All the gates were made of iron, and bells were hung on the door rings, the sound of which could be heard for a yojana. Outside the palace, five hundred night workers were responsible for moving the movable ladders, and five hundred morning workers were responsible for setting them up each morning. The Bodhisattva was placed in a high tower, surrounded by a host of consorts, and was seduced by songs, dances, and music. The ministers, leading an army composed of elephants, horses, chariots, and infantry, were appointed to patrol outside. At night, Śuddhodana guarded the east gate, Daṇḍapāṇi guarded the south gate, Śuklodana guarded the west gate, and Amṛtodana guarded the north gate, each of the four brothers guarding with their respective armies. Now, six days had passed, and on the evening of the seventh day, the Bodhisattva thought: 'If I renounce the world without informing my father, my parents will not agree, and people will blame me.' So he went to his father and said with respect: 'The time for the manifestation of the gods has come, please do not create displeasure or obstacles.' The king, clinging to the throne, refused his request three times. Finally, the prince requested: 'If you do not grant my request, I will cut off the cycle of rebirth from here.' The king could not refuse, so he agreed, saying: 'May your wish be fulfilled, and I will rejoice later.' Then, the Bodhisattva thought that if he renounced the world after abandoning the consorts, he would be considered incompetent by the non-Buddhists. In order to avoid this slander, he played with Ghoṣadhāriṇī and Nandā with the samādhi of heroic progress, and blessed her womb with the emanation of Vajrasattva in the form of Prince Rāhula. This was the last time he slept with a woman and the last time he slept at home. From then on, he would...
