Padmasambhava (Tibetan: པདྨ་སམ་བྷ་ཝ།) is my refuge, the Ratna's feet (Tibetan: རཏྣའི་ཞབས།) that eliminate all the downfalls of samsara and nirvana. From the depths of my heart, I pay homage with unwavering reverence. Secondly, regarding the content of the text, there are seventeen aspects. First, it is about turning the mind away from meaningless things at all costs: Alas! The enjoyments of this life are like a feast in a dream, and the splendor of youth is also like a rainbow. Life is impermanent, like a dance of lightning. Even if one can rule over all the perfections of the world, it is like a pile of beautiful white clouds in autumn. Momentary and impermanent, it is the nature of destruction. Having seen these, may I develop a sense of renunciation towards samsara! Regarding this, the enjoyments, dwellings, friends, houses, and so on that are seen in this life are like going to a garden for a feast in a dream last night. When awakened, none of those things exist, and one feels very ashamed. Similarly, one clings to the beauty of youth, grooming and adorning oneself with gorgeous clothes. Even if it seems to stay for a while, the suffering of change lurks like a heron stalking a fish. Involuntarily, sudden disasters such as diseases, demons, water, and fire, like a rainbow, disappear as soon as they appear, unable to last long. Life is like a butter lamp in the wind, and lifespan is like lightning flashing in the sky. Even if one is a universal monarch or the rulers of various regions, ruling over a vast world, it is like a pile of white clouds as beautiful as cotton in autumn, like things as beautiful as elephants, chariots, or peacocks, which exist now and disappear in an instant. In the laziness of thinking that one will not die, one is destroyed by the messengers of Yama, the Lord of Death. Body and mind separate, unwillingly bound by ropes, covered by curtains, and turning into grayish-white bones in the cemetery. There is no guarantee that this will not happen even tonight. Remembering these, may I develop a strong sense of renunciation towards the nature of samsara! Second, praying to rely on a virtuous and qualified spiritual friend: The source of all happiness and accomplishments is the supreme Mahayana spiritual friend who possesses all the qualities. Merely remembering can steal away the fear of samsara and nirvana. May I rely on them properly with unwavering faith! Regarding this, without a boat or bridge, one cannot cross a great river.

As mentioned (in the previous text), the temporary happiness of higher realms and the ultimate fruit of definite goodness, or rather, the source of attaining supreme siddhis, is that if one can find a guru who possesses all the qualities mentioned in the sutras and tantras, a virtuous friend of the Mahayana, then merely remembering him can also take away the fear of samsara and nirvana. If not, one should also rely on someone who has great compassion, who contemplates emptiness (state) for his own sake in a general way, or even someone who is merely familiar with the direct realization of the Dharma being taught, who is not weary of benefiting others, and who does not covet gain, and rely on him with reverence, so that the minds of teacher and student are in harmony. Because all the sutras and tantras say that one must rely on the guru as a guide for this life and the next. Third, taking refuge in the Three Jewels and generating the mind of enlightenment. Thus, the meaning obtained from the virtuous friend, The guru and the Three Jewels, who are the permanent refuge, May we pray with devotion, inseparable in our minds, With the compassion of seeing all beings as our parents, Taking all the suffering of all beings upon ourselves, Giving all our happiness to others without reservation, I shall attain supreme bliss, After generating such a mind of enlightenment, May we spend our days and nights practicing the six perfections. Having relied on a spiritual friend in this way, one must first understand that the meaning gained from him is not merely the pursuit of peace and happiness, but rather to correctly understand the key points of the refuge of a great being. Taking refuge is not temporary, but rather to take refuge in the permanent refuge - the guru and the Three Jewels, taking refuge from the depths of one's heart. Then, one must regard all sentient beings as parents, which is the root of the Mahayana path. Understanding this, one will realize that some parents are in hell, some are hungry ghosts, some are animals, some are human but poor, etc., all suffering, and compassion will naturally arise. At this time, when inhaling, take their suffering into yourself; when exhaling, give your happiness and merit to them, cultivate this aspiration, and generate the mind of enlightenment to place them in a state of bliss, and spend your days and nights practicing the six perfections.
