Therefore, (one must cultivate) great compassion. Whoever possesses great compassion, all the Buddha's teachings will be like in the palm of their hand. It is said. We people, not to mention giving up our lives with compassion, even for a moment, there are few who generate compassion in their hearts. In that case, not to mention omniscience, there is not even hope of attaining liberation. Why? Because in the pursuit of liberation and enlightenment, Bodhisattvas have selflessly exchanged themselves with others countless times to generate Bodhicitta. It is like this: In the past, when Shakyamuni Buddha himself was born as King Padma, there was a time when a great plague broke out in his territory, and many people died. The king summoned the doctors and asked them what could cure the plague. They said: If there was the meat of the Rohita fish, it would be good. Other than that, nothing can cure it, because the plague has made people delirious. On the morning of an auspicious day, the king bathed, put on new clothes, took vows, offered great offerings to the Three Jewels, and prayed earnestly. With extreme compassion for the sick, he vowed that immediately after his death, he would be reborn as a Rohita fish, swimming upstream in the river, and then jumped from the top of the palace. As soon as he jumped, by the power of his vow, the king was immediately reborn as that fish in the river. It said in human language: I am the Rohita fish, eat my meat! So, everyone took its meat. When the meat on one side was finished, it turned over and let people cut the other side. In this way, when the meat on one side was finished, the meat on the other side grew back. In this way, they took turns eating its meat, and everyone was freed from the disease. At that time, it said to the people: For your sake, I have done this. To repay my kindness, please stop doing evil and do as much good as you can! They also did as it said. From then on, they did not fall into the lower realms either. It is said. Therefore, in order to pursue enlightenment, one must cultivate the great compassion of cherishing others more than oneself. Some people may think: That is the act of a Buddha, ordinary people cannot do it. They just say it in words and then become lazy. It is not necessarily so. In a previous story, in a place where birds nested, there was a crow.

In one place, six monks and a servant boarded a boat, and when the boat had traveled about a quarter of the way across the water, the boat builder said, "It's a bit heavy, if someone knows how to swim, please help to get ashore. Or I'll go ashore and one of you can row." But everyone said they couldn't do either. The servant said, "Rather than everyone dying together, it's better for me to die alone." So he jumped into the water. As soon as he jumped into the water, a rainbow appeared and a rain of flowers fell. It is said that although he could not swim, he did not die because of the power of his pure bodhicitta. It is said that this person had not done any proper Buddhist practice before, but every pure thought can do that, and is able to produce such a result, so we must repeatedly examine these and generate the determination to adjust our motivation. If there is no such prior preparation, even if you recite the bodhicitta vows a hundred or a thousand times, you will not be able to generate a genuine bodhicitta. Therefore, it depends entirely on training the mind with great compassion as the cause. If its essence is completely condensed, according to our own tradition, "Loving-kindness is the mind without hatred, compassion is the mind without attachment, bodhicitta is the mind without ignorance." Thus, in accordance with the three pitakas and trainings, restraining one's own continuum from the side of non-virtue is the training of discipline, developing virtue upwards such as meditation is the training of mind, accomplishing the two benefits and distinguishing the knowable is the training of wisdom, that is, successively explaining abandoning misdeeds, accumulating virtues, and benefiting sentient beings. It is also taught in conjunction with the three emptinesses. Therefore, do not misunderstand compassion, but with the wish that I will use the three doors of body, speech, and mind for virtuous deeds for the benefit of all sentient beings, and place them on the ground of Buddhahood, do not be separated from that wish. Bodhicitta should be generated with the verse, "When the limits of space are exhausted, the limits of beings will also be exhausted." In this way, all conventional bodhicitta can be summarized into aspiration bodhicitta and action bodhicitta. The "Entering the Bodhisattva's Way of Life" says, "Bodhicitta is briefly twofold, namely aspiration and action bodhicitta." In the great commentaries of the Paramita tradition, bodhicitta is extensively divided into seven branches, etc., but here it is briefly summarized according to the tradition of Shantideva.
