Having abandoned the three baskets of ropes, the division of tantras into six categories is based on the four tantras common to both the old and new schools. In addition to these, the Nyingma school adds the Anu Yoga tantra, known as the Subsequent Yoga, and the Ati Yoga tantra, known as the Utmost Yoga, thus forming the six tantras. Regarding the classification of tantras, some Indian teachers also say that there are seven or five. Considering Anu and Ati as the number of vehicles seems to be the self-language of the Nyingma school. If one argues, "It is unreasonable!" that would be too extreme. Generally speaking, the meaning of a vehicle is that, although views differ, it is called a vehicle because it can elevate the lower to the higher, as stated in the 'Collection of Precious Qualities.' Specifically, it is like this: First, the three outer characteristic vehicles sequentially elevate beings to the state of Arhat, Solitary Buddha like a parrot or coral, and the eleventh ground, the realm of Universal Light, therefore it is called a vehicle. Second, the three outer Thubpa (capable one) tantric vehicles sequentially elevate beings to the ground of the three-family Vajradhara, the ground of the four-family sky-goers, and the ground of the five-family Dense Array realm, therefore it is called a vehicle. Third, the three forms of the inner skillful means tantra sequentially elevate beings to the ground of the letter wheel, the great assembly wheel, the great bliss ground, and the wisdom lama's ground, therefore the explanation of the term vehicle is established. If one argues, "Because it is wisdom, it is not suitable as an object of elevation," that is also wrong. Although it is wisdom, it can also be called that from the perspective of having to be manifested. If one says this, then the view of freedom from elaboration is also wisdom, but since the stages of the path have arisen, there are unavoidable faults. As it says in the 'Uttaratantra': 'Forms have inferior, intermediate, and superior, like the sky.' Just as pottery has good and bad, but the space within it has no good or bad, the distinction between large and small is made by removing impurities. Wisdom is the same, because it has to be manifested, it is 'yana' (vehicle). From the perspective of the meaning expressed, it is intolerable to limit and define the vehicle. As it says in the 'Lankavatara Sutra': 'As long as there is no consciousness, there is no gate of the vehicle. As soon as consciousness abides, the gate of the vehicle is inconceivable.' This means that the vehicle is inconceivable.
