There is nothing more important than simply resting the mind's own nature in awareness, without doing anything. Even if you rest in this way, if thoughts still arise incessantly and diffusely, then, do not chase, analyze, or contemplate the arising thoughts like ordinary people, thinking "this is this, that is that," but rather look back at where the arising one is, and what it is like. By looking inward in this way, thoughts have no source of origin, no place of present dwelling, and no destination to ultimately go to, therefore they will naturally become empty, rootless, and completely disintegrated. In short, no matter what kind of thoughts arise, whether they are happy, sad, neutral, or unspecified, recognize what is arising, and do not fall into forgetfulness and dullness. Do not make any calculations about happiness, sadness, etc., but rather rest on your own, and in this way you will gain freedom to abide in the present state. When the power of insight increases, meditation will progress. At that time, you can decide whether or not you need to consult with a wise person who has the view of a lama, based on your own wisdom and capacity. In general, the boundary between realization and non-realization is only as thin as the palm of your hand, so knowing your own nature is called meditation, and not knowing is called delusion. There is no difference in the way thoughts arise for practitioners and ordinary people, the difference lies in whether or not they cling to thoughts. Ordinary people will cling to the thoughts that arise in their minds, thinking "if I do this, I will succeed, if I don't do this, I will not succeed, I must do this for this, first do that, and then this will happen." These thoughts swirl in their minds, they speak them out, and they act on them, and ultimately, in the state of greed, hatred, and ignorance, delusion arises continuously like a string of beads, and their habits are deeply ingrained, so they drift endlessly in samsara. But practitioners will cut off the root of the arising thoughts on their own, place awareness in an unspecified state, and practice this naked awareness of the present, unpolluted by any good or bad. When realization merges into the Dharmadhatu, they will reach the state of Nirvana. By striving to practice in this way, one can stand out from the crowd of ordinary people, entrust their mind to the lama and the Three Jewels, not listen to the words of others, take control of themselves, and study the biographies of previous accomplished ones. If you encounter adversity and evil spirits, regard them as firewood for eliminating obscurations, and think that this is eliminating bad karma, and thereby practice with joy. Food

Rather than placing your hopes on acquiring mere clothing, do not forsake the Dharma for the sake of food. Even if joy and happiness arise, they are impermanent, like a dream from last night, so practice the illusory nature of desirable objects. With such manliness, establish a life-fortress of practice in places like cliffs and snowfields, uphold the biographies of previous accomplished ones, and even if you do not completely exhaust the concept of birth and death, you must certainly come to a point where you have no regrets at the time of death. That is the meaning of practicing the Dharma! These are the words of Rangjung Pema (Self-Arisen Lotus), from the hermitage of the great powerful palace of Oddiyana Rangjung (Self-Arisen), a secluded retreat like a bird's nest, a teaching given to the vidyadhara Lhundrup (Spontaneously Accomplished) by the yogi Khyentse Özer (Wisdom and Love's Light). May it be virtuous! In the unmade, still, vast expanse, Saṃsāra and nirvāṇa are non-dual, beyond effort and thought. Awareness is beyond view, meditation, and action. To the innate nature, I prostrate without acceptance or rejection. The way to settle the mind is: the ordinary consciousness of the present moment, naturally, without fabrication or adulteration, clear and nakedly aware, which cannot be definitively established by words, is just this. Meditate by maintaining these two without forgetting them at all times. Forgetting this is no meditation; not forgetting it is meditation. The ultimate way to settle is just this hand gesture, as the Omniscient One said: Even if you recognize your own face, if you do not familiarize yourself with it, Deluded thoughts will carry you away like a young child on the battlefield. Therefore, it is said. Apart from this, Whatever arises, such as a pleasant and joyful meditation experience, or attachment to clarity, or an incomprehensible darkness, does not go beyond the scope of straying and losing. Meditate in the same way. The mind abides here. All the definite understandings that think, "It is just this," are the husk of the mind, for the reason mentioned earlier. Even if you meditate for a long time, if attachment does not subside, It is like meaningless effort, a line of descendants cut off, or a reputation for profit. This is known from this. Therefore, if you are always mindful of this present consciousness, which is free from fabrication, adulteration, thought, and speech, it is called meditation, it is called awareness, it is called primordial purity. If you are not mindful of this, it is called delusion, it is called ignorance, it is called mind. Saṃsāra and nirvāṇa are nothing other than awareness and non-awareness. In this way, if you are disturbed by a flurry of thoughts during meditation, the thoughts themselves do not go beyond the scope of meditation, so do not merely let the thoughts drift along, but rather let them recognize themselves.
