Pages 499 to 600. Pages 499 to 600. Collected Questions and Answers on Generation and Completion Stage Meditation Methods and Instructions from the Scattered Writings of Longchen Nyamkhai Naljor. Homage to the Primordial Buddha, Immaculate Light! Regarding meditation methods, when a thought arises, without examination, analysis, or contemplation, but remaining as if fixing on an object, even if subtle thoughts flash, they immediately vanish. Afterwards, when thoughts flash, the very awareness that thinks it needs to separately seek emptiness seems doubtful and uneasy. Or, when ordinary awareness arises in unfabricated meditation, and one remembers a slight clarity and emptiness, the notion that this is the essence of meditation is understood as a fault of entrusting the essence of meditation to it. In that case, if thoughts do not arise, meditation is easy. When thoughts arise, the need to examine whether the thoughts are liberated or not causes the awareness to become doubtful and uneasy. The special characteristic of Dzogchen is that when a thought arises, it is sufficient to focus on a single virtue and maintain the continuity of awareness. Ordinary consciousness, without any alteration by the mind, is itself the view of original purity. As the Great Omniscient One said, "All phenomena are the pacification of elaboration, free from all assertions, which is also present in the Sutra system. However, how can the Paramitas accomplish the attainment of Buddhahood by not changing or altering this present consciousness in the slightest? Therefore, Secret Mantra is particularly superior due to the two, skillful means and wisdom." As the quote from the "Lamp for Differentiating the Three" and the assertion show, from the perspective of view and wisdom, the difference between the elaboration-free state that is fabricated by the mind and the spontaneously accomplished elaboration-free state is like the difference between heaven and earth. Now, as soon as the thought arises, "I need to start meditating," if you immediately maintain the virtuous continuity of awareness, there will be no confusion or straying. It is ignorance that wanders in samsara. If awareness is recognized, ignorance is naturally liberated. Within that awareness, no matter what kind of thought arises, recognize that the single awareness that thinks, "This time it will appear like this," is virtuous, and without following the thought or engaging in analysis, the thought will not only naturally liberate, but the thought will also be transformed because it has not become a cause for the path.

Thoughts are like drawing on stone. Their habitual tendencies become strong, leading to endless cycles of samsara. Thoughts that are grasped by mindfulness are like drawing on water, arising and dissolving simultaneously, so they will not become the basis for habitual tendencies and samsara in the future. As it is said in the General Treatise on Wisdom by Guru Garab Dorje: "At the time of arising, they arise together without good or bad; at the time of abiding, they abide together without good or bad; at the time of liberation, they are liberated together without good or bad." Other Dharma terms such as self-emptiness and other-emptiness, as well as the negation of emptiness and non-affirming negation, also union, co-emergent, and possessing all supreme qualities, etc., by pursuing profound views and meditations, the self-grasping of one's own philosophical system, which is fabricated by the mind, patches the unspeakable, unthinkable, and inexpressible state with the patches of the obscuration of knowledge. This is also stated in the common Sutra Pitaka: "Bhagavan, if an Arhat thinks, 'I have attained Arhatship,' then he will grasp onto that self, grasp onto sentient beings, grasp onto life, and grasp onto individuals." Like that. Therefore, the unchanging nature of the Sugata-garbha, which is not defiled by the five aggregates and eight consciousnesses, is such that the yogis who are free from elaboration dwell in solitude, and the awareness that is pure from the beginning does not need to be changed even a little bit; it is enough to maintain it with the continuity of mindfulness. The reason for this is also clearly stated in the Bhadrakalpika Sutra: "Seeing no essence is meditation; seeing no birth is wisdom." From that state, how to transform thoughts into the path is also as stated above. As it is said in the Treasury of Reality: "When the five external objects appear as diverse and varied, whatever thoughts arise internally, recognize that they are appearing on the external objects at that time, and the power of arising is complete. Staying in that state, they naturally dissolve without a trace; whatever arises, leave it as it is, or let it scatter, or relax the arising on the appearance. Any one of these three methods, by stopping and gathering, will cause the Dharmakaya to settle in its own place. If you do not truly recognize it, you will become scattered. If the power is not complete, even if you look at it, it will disappear, and then you will not be able to cope with adverse conditions. If it does not naturally dissolve, then directly cut it off, etc. Therefore, these three points are very important.
