Rather than merely settling into memory, those who observe and gather the mind within the heart, and engage in much examination, may be the conclusion of some who listen, contemplate, and meditate. Those who renounce and meditate are actually dwelling in the ropes of bondage. So, is it that one can be effortlessly liberated without doing anything? Ordinary sentient beings, although abiding in the nature of reality itself, wander in samsara endlessly because they do not know how to abide in it. The way the mind of a great meditator abides is free from the four extremes of existence and non-existence, the naturally abiding, self-settled way of abiding that is introduced by a qualified lama. It is not mixed with external objects, nor is it gathered inward. In between, it is not tainted by the remedies of meditation and grasping. Maintaining the continuity of non-conceptual awareness, which is primordially pure in its own nature, is called Great Perfection, the non-mistaken practice. When that becomes familiar and powerful, the obscurations of knowledge from meditation and grasping are purified, and when one arrives in the expanse free from elaboration, that unfixated characteristic will come. Nowadays, most great meditators suppress the mind on the eyes, and place the burden of emptiness on the mind. For the three states of arising, liberation, and abiding of thoughts, it is like needing to protect and act. Counting arising and ceasing is called meditation, but it is unrelated to the true path. In general, they consider abiding to be meditation, and regard non-abiding as delusion. Hoping to grasp clarity as wisdom and emptiness as the nature of reality, these people will face a famine of meditation. If abiding, they cling to their own existence in the moment of abiding, and do not strive to observe the essence of abiding, and where it might deviate. If moving, they recognize their own nature in the moment of moving, and do not pursue where it might disappear with examination. For the unstated remedy that is neither abiding nor moving, awareness like melted butter is needed. In general, in the first moment that is grasped by mindfulness, there is the wisdom of non-elaboration, self-abiding, which is unerring, and worth more than a thousand gold coins. And others, such as comfortable relaxation, clear shimmering, empty emptiness, and so on, are called applying the package of practice and attachment to the view, which cannot overcome difficulties. However, for beginners, since habit has not yet become strength, the practice and attachment that naturally arise from the view will be stronger. Therefore, when coarse afflictions of anger, attachment, and ignorance arise due to various external appearances such as the increase of wealth, right at that moment
