When experiences arise, that is meditation through conceptual analysis. Now, there is no need for that. When the seer and the seen become non-dual, that is unmistaken meditation. Appearances are the play of awareness, which is very important. There is no need for appearances; all the dharmas of samsara, nirvana, and the path have no other place to go than the power of awareness. Moreover, the essence of guarding the samaya of mind, even if gross clinging to duality does not arise, if there is a belief that 'this is it,' that trust is attachment to experience, an obscuration of knowledge. Therefore, abandoning this is extremely difficult. The Great Orgyen (Padmasambhava) said, 'Bound by hopes for signs of ground and path, ruined by attachment to the taste of experience and realization, deceived by the water of mirages.' Therefore, the core of that meaning is that in the heart, when a powerful awareness arises naturally, free from all conceptual labels, then at any time, whether eating, sleeping, walking, or sitting, if it arises spontaneously and without adulteration, that is sufficient. Holding the practice of retaining the winds as an important part, this lineage is very profound, so cherish it. If the winds and mind are gathered into the central channel through specific instructions like those of the Whispered Lineage, then, according to the Dzogchen self-view, by filling the intermediate winds in a state of non-effort, the wisdom wind naturally transforms everything. The Omniscient Longchenpa also said, 'We do not wish to attain enlightenment by holding the breath through the nostrils. The breath of the nostrils is like the emptiness of a bellows.' His intention is also in this. However, when holding the breath with the fourfold union, like threading a needle, do not force the flow of awareness; if the mind wanders, there will be great obstacles from the life-force wind, etc., so be mindful. I rejoice in your diligence and perseverance in practice. To make realization arise and purify obscurations, there is nothing more powerful than devotion to the guru, so regard the root guru and the Great Orgyen (Padmasambhava) as inseparable, and strive in guru yoga. Regarding your samaya of mind, the reason it was difficult to maintain before is the fault of ordinary awareness arising in meditation, and the reason you could not connect with bliss is the blissful experience of falling into one-sided shamatha. Drawing the mind inward to practice, if you think, 'this is it,' that is similar to what later practitioners call 'attachment to meditation,' and all of that is not the correct view. Now

There is no need to force or exert effort; simply rest in the natural state of awareness, and there is nothing else to meditate on. The meditation of the so-called "Shravaka Path" is almost without error. Perhaps it could be called the one-pointed awareness that slightly suppresses the karmic winds. Because there is no need to meditate on this, it is easy to develop self-conceit, thinking, "This is non-meditation." Therefore, do not judge the view with standards of high or low, but rather, in all activities such as eating, sleeping, walking, and sitting, maintain a state of non-speaking. The essence of the matter is that the present awareness is free from the three aspects of arising, ceasing, and abiding, and the view of Dzogchen is primordially liberated. There is no more supreme samaya than this, no clearer or more blissful state. Once you judge it with the thought, "This is it," it is not the view of Dzogchen. In the *Tantra of Clear Light, Lion's Perfect Strength*, it says: "Whatever effort is made without limit is like a blind person groping in space, impossible to find. No one can alter this truth that cannot be found. This non-elaborate knowable has no limit." Therefore, at this time, one should recite with respect and devotion, exert effort in Guru Yoga in four sessions, and from the depths of one's heart, generate faith in seeing the Guru as the Buddha. Whether it is suffering or happiness, good or bad, think that only you know, and with such conviction, let your innate devotion blaze forth, your body tremble, and tears flow naturally. If you do not pray in this way from the depths of your heart, you will not receive the transmission of blessings through mere verbal recitation. Therefore, pray in this way. Receive the four empowerments. In the state of blending your mind with the Guru's mind, relax awareness, free from extremes. By doing so, some experience of clarity and emptiness will arise from the inner obscuration of the cognitive obscurations. When the view that cannot be expressed in words or examples, and in which the elaborations of the four extremes are exhausted in the Dharmadhatu, arises in the mind, at the same time, like a light rain falling from the sky, the qualities of the path's signs will arise. Please keep this in mind. Thus it is said. Regarding how to meditate: When awareness is strong and thoughts are weak, this is the clear appearance. When this happens, relax your eyes.
