There is no asceticism without recitation, and no fire offering. There is no one with a mandala, and there is no mandala. That is the recitation of mantras, it is asceticism and fire offering. That is the one with a mandala, and the great mandala itself. Thus it is said. In the Dohakosha, it says: Being separated from the bliss of Suchness, merely possessing the asceticism of the body, as a novice monk, a fully ordained monk, an elder, their intentions are to renounce in this way. Some are explaining the Sutra Pitaka, some see holding the nature of the one taste of mind. Others take the Great Vehicle as a cause, that is a treatise that measures the scriptures. Thus it is said, asceticism torments the body and mind, and if one clings to the liberation of cause and effect, one will not be liberated. Similarly, if one does not understand the nature of the liberation of samsara and nirvana, then the conceptual mind of the lower generation stage and completion stage will not be liberated. Similarly, it says therein: Furthermore, meditate on all the mandala wheels. Some are engaged in explaining the meaning of the fourth initiation. Some contemplate the realm of space. Others are looking at emptiness. Most are engaged in discordant aspects. Thus, and so on, it will also break the heart. Why? Because the three vows, the six perfections, the generation stage and the completion stage, and so on, are only taught as the cause for accomplishing co-emergent wisdom, because those are not the actual state of the fruit. And here, by realizing what the nature of the fruit is through the oral instructions of the guru, taking the fruit itself as the path, thereby purifying the adventitious stains, what is the cause? Because thoughts are the mandala of the four equalities, in the nature of non-elaboration, having the nature of deity and mantra as inherent qualities, therefore it transcends the appearance of the path with faces and hands and the gathering of sounds and words. Thus, it is also said in the Two Examinations Sutra: In the nature of non-elaboration, deities and mantras truly abide. Thus it is said. Regarding this, the tenet of the Mind Class is called the Great Perfection, which speaks of the basis, bondage, and transformation. Although it appears in various ways, by establishing the power, play, and bodhicitta of one's own mind as three, therefore nothing is obstructed, and one does not cling to the power and appearance of the three themselves as being established in meaning, therefore it transcends the wrong conceptualization of considering appearance as mind.
