Considering the absence [of something] is the third dhyana. Gathering joy is the fourth dhyana. As taught, the first dhyana is a mind that includes both conceptualization and analysis, which brings about meditative stabilization. Specifically, it is the clear and empty experience of settling without conceptualizing anything, along with the application of mindfulness and scrutiny. From this practice, genuine non-conceptualization arises. The post-meditation period and intermediate states involve conceptualization and analysis. From the clarity of this [dhyana], the eye that sees the other side and the clairvoyance that knows past and future states also emerge. By familiarizing oneself with such a small dhyana, one is born in the Brahma Assembly. By familiarizing oneself with a medium dhyana, one is born in the Brahma Retinue. By familiarizing oneself with a large dhyana, one is born in the Great Brahma realm. The second dhyana is the preparatory stage where the actual basis of the first mind is stable, without conceptualization but only with analysis. Specifically, although there is no subtle recollection of knowing clarity and emptiness from anything, the clear and non-conceptual arises with the experience of grasping onto that mind of one's own, which is the actual basis. By familiarizing oneself with this a little, one is born in the Limited Light realm. With a medium amount, one is born in the Immeasurable Light realm. With a great amount, one is born in the Clear Light realm. The third dhyana is the actual basis where the preparatory stage of the second mind's actual basis being stable gives rise to a distinctive non-conceptualization without any conceptualization or analysis. By familiarizing oneself with this a little, one is born in the Limited Virtue realm. With a medium amount, one is born in the Immeasurable Virtue realm. With a great amount, one is born in the Extensive Virtue realm. The fourth dhyana has three abodes for ordinary beings and five for noble ones. Among these, for ordinary beings, from the preparatory stage of the third mind's actual basis being stable, a joy and bliss of clear, non-conceptual happiness arises that is far greater than before, which is the actual basis of the fourth [dhyana]. By familiarizing oneself with this a little, one is born in the Cloudless realm. With a medium amount, one is born in the Merit-Born realm. With a great amount, one is born in the Great Fruit realm. Thus, if the nature of joy and bliss of the Great Fruit dhyana is mistaken for mere calm abiding, the clarity of both conceptualization and non-conceptualization will cease, and one will be propelled into the Formless realm. However, if it appears but one does not grasp it as self-nature, and it is seized by the non-conceptual insight of higher seeing, then one will be born as a deity of pure lineage in another abode of noble ones, becoming a cause for liberation. How does liberation occur? If one combines it with the vehicles that take mind as the path, then one will enter the path of a Hearer or Solitary Realizer.
