All is equal, without foundation, self-awareness binds the three realms, and with conceptualization, one will fall. Thus it is said. Regarding the methods of cultivating śamatha and vipaśyanā separately, they have already been well explained in the sutras, but here, condensing the intention of the noble Avadhūta-jñāna (meaning "unfettered wisdom"), I will explain the meaning of viewing the two as one. Thus, the dharmas that are grasped as saṃsāra and nirvāṇa are naturally and completely pure. In this very suchness samādhi, the mind does not waver from the state of single-pointed awareness, which is śamatha. Its characteristic is the clarity of discriminating wisdom that perceives the absence of substantiality, which is vipaśyanā. The noble Avadhūta-jñāna said, "All dharmas are naturally and completely pure, therefore one should cultivate the perception of non-substantiality." Thus it is said. Thus, if one becomes accustomed to the meditation of śamatha and vipaśyanā as one, then all dharmas are gathered into the two bodhicittas, and in the post-meditation state, everything arises as the nature of great compassion. From that very mode, "All dharmas are gathered into the bodhicitta, therefore one should cultivate the perception of great compassion." Thus it is said. When one becomes accustomed to the emptiness of śamatha and vipaśyanā as one in the equipoise state, and to the union of great compassion in the post-meditation state, then the two accumulations are perfected simultaneously, and one touches the noble truth of the nature of clear light. "All dharmas are naturally unobservable and clear light, therefore one should cultivate the perception of not clinging to anything." Thus it is said. Furthermore, substantiality is the cause of defilement, it is the obscuration of knowledge. If one destroys it with the self-aware wisdom of each individual, then the nature of buddhahood arises from the realization of one's own mind. "If one realizes the mind, it is wisdom, therefore one should cultivate the perception of not seeking the Buddha elsewhere." Thus it is said. These four lines summarize all the essential points of the sutras for cultivation. The "perception" here should not be regarded as the nature of the aggregates gathered by the substantiality of one's own continuum, because this contradicts "The five aggregates are also all empty in nature, one should follow and observe them as they truly are." Therefore, the "perception" at the time of observing emptiness is discriminating wisdom, but its function is all-pervasive in the nature of reality, therefore it is the wisdom of hearing and thinking.

At that time, the discriminating examination that possesses characteristics is what will be explained below. During the wisdom of meditation, because it is non-discriminating, it does not grasp the limits of habituation; it is the self-aware wisdom of each individual. As the 'Manjushri's View Briefly Stated' says: 'Wisdom penetrates the depths of the mind, without any habituation.' So it is said. Proclaiming the clamor of vipassanā in the vast solitary retreat of śamatha is a manifestation of not having properly distinguished the aspects of 'as it is' and 'as many as there are.' As the Noble Jewel Cloud Sutra states: 'Śamatha is the one-pointedness of mind. Vipassanā is the correct and distinct examination of the Dharma as it is.' This is clear. Therefore, ultimately, not understanding that śamatha and vipassanā are of the same essence without distinction, and considering all abiding as śamatha and all examination as vipassanā, is something that deviates from the teachings of the Tathāgata. As the Bodhisattva Pitaka states: 'The śamatha of a Bodhisattva is correct thought, not even abiding in the notion of peace. Vipassanā is seeing the view, not even seeing the view itself. Whoever sees in this way sees correctly.' This is because it contradicts the above. The individual distinctions are: In the aspect of the two, two distinctions are established: arising from wisdom and arising from instructions. Arising from wisdom, in accordance with the sound, being one-pointedly tranquil with the meaning of what is heard, and from that, realizing the meaning is the characteristic of vipassanā. Arising from instructions, following the meaning, the mind being unmoving is śamatha, knowing its nature is vipassanā. As the Noble Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra says: 'Śamatha and vipassanā are two: arising from wisdom and arising from instructions. Arising from wisdom is: attending to the words of the twelve categories of scriptures is śamatha; realizing their meaning is vipassanā. Arising from instructions is: making the mind unmoving through instructions is śamatha; realizing its meaning is vipassanā.' So it is said. Therefore, if one does not understand the difference that the former is the preparatory stage of dhyāna and the latter is the actual stage, then even after arriving at the destination, one will not abandon the efforts of the path, and therefore one will not attain the pacification of the senses. Even so, for a person
