The nature of the ālaya-vijñāna arising from… is the basis, pervasiveness, and essence of all ignorance. It is like a ship filled with sentient beings emanated from mind and mental factors, karma and habitual tendencies, and various functions of the eight aggregates of consciousness. As it says in Rangshar, "The analogy of the ālaya and the dharmakāya is like the ocean and a ship; the path arises from it." That is, if the spontaneously arisen awareness is not reversed, then the adventitious aspect of ignorance will spontaneously revert, and like a ship going to land, the obscurations of the dharmakāya will be purified by enlightenment, remaining in a state of possessing both. Thus, the essence of the dharmakāya, the stainless awareness, is not to be reversed in any way, because it exists as the ultimate basis of liberation, like awakening from sleep. The nature of the ālaya, like being asleep, is the basis for the arising of various illusions and dreams, so it needs to be awakened from. As it says in the same text, "The analogy of delusion and liberation is like sleeping and waking, because there is a difference in the faculties." That is, the ālaya and the phenomena that depend on it are impurities to be purified, so the aspects of sleep and dreams need to be reversed. However, the essence of the dharmakāya, the stainless awareness, is to be cultivated temporarily and exists as the ultimate object of realization and the basis of liberation, so it is not to be reversed at any time, because it is the place of liberation of the fruit. If we differentiate, there are four types of ālaya: the ālaya of the original meaning, the ālaya of the application meaning, the ālaya of the habitual body, and the ālaya of various habitual tendencies. The first refers to the aspect of opening the door to samsara with coemergent ignorance in relation to the initial movement of discriminating awareness from the state of dharmadhātu. The second refers to the fact that the discriminating consciousness itself connects to samsara with its self-ignorance looking outward, and connects to nirvāṇa from its own nature of awareness. The third is designated from the aspect of the manifestation of the body of mind, the nature of earth—flesh, the nature of water—blood, the nature of fire—light, the nature of wind—mind, because the consciousness has the habitual tendencies of the body. The fourth refers to the aspect of relying on the various mental habitual tendencies of that consciousness. Although four reversals are spoken of in this way, they are actually one entity, that is, understanding the relationship between the dependent ālaya and the depending eight consciousnesses.

It exists in the form of . Because there is no interruption inside and outside, it is called the Alaya Consciousness. As for the root consciousness, from the aspect of each consciousness holding the five objects without discrimination, it is called the five root consciousnesses. The respective functions of Alaya are: first, to serve as the basis of delusion; second, to connect with body and mind and experience happiness and suffering; third, to serve as the cause for connecting with the body and many aggregates; fourth, to accumulate karma and afflictions, and to establish causal relationships. As it is said in the Wheel of Self-Born Bliss: "The five senses are the objects of appearance, but if they are not examined by the mind, although it is Alaya, it is not consciousness. It is also of the mind consciousness, although it is divided into various habits, it cannot increase the habits, although it is consciousness, it is not Alaya. When the five kinds of appearances appear in anything, it is completely integrated with non-duality, and when the eight consciousnesses gather and unite, it is called the Alaya Consciousness." In short, the reason why the word Alaya is used is: because of following the previous karma, there are habits, because of accepting the later karma, there is Vipaka, because of the order of the maturation of cause and effect, and because of being the common agent of happiness and suffering, it is called Alaya. Those who do not distinguish this kind of difference mistakenly think that "Alaya is the basis of all things, and also the basis of Nirvana", and regard Alaya as Dharmakaya, which should be prohibited even in the common vehicle, let alone in the supreme secret vehicle? The Self-Manifestation says: "Some people think that Alaya is Dharmakaya, in order to answer this question, the characteristics of Alaya are like this." Then he replied: "Because it perfects everything, it is Alaya." Then he refuted with the words of questioning: "Is there a possibility for the Buddha to change? Because Alaya manifests all kinds of things, because everything is perfected from it, sentient beings can become Buddhas. Why does it perfect everything? Or it will become alternating. Why does it manifest all kinds of things? Sometimes it will become a Buddha, sometimes it will become a sentient being. Why is there alternation?" Then he refuted the question and said: "Then, is there no Alaya?" Then he answered the question: "Alaya holds on to the discriminating mind, and is deceived by various confused consciousnesses. Everything.
