Mind is related to intellect, cutting off the elaborations of the four extremes. Having cut them off in this way, clinging to the view that has been cut off as supreme, and abiding without conceptualizing its essence, it stagnates and is ignorant like a pool of water in a lotus pond. If one cultivates discriminating thoughts with skill, one will divide practice into two parts, accomplishing cause and effect through the object to be seen and the seer, thereby harming the lamp of awareness that has the nature of dualistic grasping. As it says in the Sixth Space, "View is the impurity of the mind. In the stainless, pure nature of reality, there is no object to be seen or seer. There is no seeing in the view itself. If there is a view, the lamp of awareness will be extinguished. Therefore, in Ati Dzogchen, there is no nature of clinging to a view. In Ati Yoga Dzogchen, it is said that there is no need to accomplish the fruit. The fruit is unmade and self-arisen. In the ground of non-conceptualization, the Thus-Gone One abides." Furthermore, awareness is like the moon in the empty sky. Although the self-light of clear depth is not diminished in the slightest, the manifestation of wisdom does not fall into the trap of mental consciousness, and so it is called the wisdom of each individual's own awareness. As it says in the Praise to the Mother of Rahula, "Inexpressible, unthinkable, unspeakable, gone beyond wisdom, unborn, unceasing, the nature of space itself, the sphere of activity of the wisdom of self-cognizance." Mind is like the light of the fifteenth moon mixed with external appearances. Because discriminating knowledge arises from the recollection and thought of objects, and because the close grasping of mental factors arises mixed with the objects of the five senses, as it says in Skillful Completion, "Mind and wisdom are not the substance of habit. Although wisdom is free from all habits, the mind accumulates various habits. If mind and wisdom are not separated, the root of the appearance of objects cannot be cut off, and even the pure nature of reality that is free from conditions is difficult to realize." Therefore, mind is the follower of awareness, but awareness does not follow the mind, and so it is not under the control of the mind. Some say that because discriminating thought can be made into an object for those who see the truth, therefore discriminating thought is knowable. This kind of statement is just looking outward, just empty talk that has not been tainted by one's own experience. Here, in the part that does not conceptualize self-arisen wisdom as an object, self-abiding awareness is spontaneously present, and it is clear from the pure aspect of non-different awareness.

Even if appearances are uninterrupted, it does not follow, analyze, or cling to the nature of objects. Therefore, in its own nature, the appearance of objects is like the reflection appearing in a mirror; it is not that individual characteristics are established within the object. This is the quality of awareness. The consciousness that appears in relation to objects is the mind of samsara, and because it cannot transcend the aspect of grasper and grasped, whether one establishes any name of union or non-union upon calm abiding that focuses single-pointedly on an empty object, and the insight that analyzes it, because there the object of clinging is closely enjoyed, it does not surpass worldly meditation. Therefore, if awareness is directly recognized and one knows how to relax in that state, the adventitious stains of the mind are not established in the nature of awareness, so they naturally dissolve, purifying without a trace, and will not be stained by habitual patterns. As it says in the 'Self-Arisen': 'The appearance of awareness itself is beyond the extremes of permanence and annihilation; the inexpressible, utterly pure Dharma is beyond the extremes of is and is not; the very nature of non-affirming and non-denying is beyond the extremes of grasping and attachment; the stainless, luminous, spontaneously accomplished nature.' And as it says in the 'All-Creating': 'Self-born wisdom does not conceptualize objects, therefore it will not be stained by the habitual patterns of conceptualization.' Likewise, awareness is wisdom abiding in its own state, independent of the means of meditation, free from sinking and excitement. The mind, being single-pointed on its object, is connected with samadhi and the dependent and that which is depended upon. Although awareness dawns on objects, it is not overcome by appearances, like mercury falling on the ground. The mind, with its components of grasper and grasped, is mixed with the aspect of closely taking up conceptual thoughts. Although awareness does not abandon the mind to somewhere else, mind and awareness do not occur together, and the afflictions that are the same entity as objects and appearances, self and essence, also flee together. Therefore, the wisdom of awareness abiding in its own state is a superior insight, so even though the appearance of objects on the face of awareness is uninterrupted, awareness itself is not lost on the appearance. Therefore, it does not rely on the means of contracting the mind in meditation, and in this way, in all states of abiding and moving, awareness has control, and cannot be overwhelmed by the harm of sinking and excitement. How does the meditation that takes the mind as its path focus single-pointedly on its object? And the two, view and meditation, are also the dependent.
