The earth becomes nine empty realms. Words and phrases are collected into verses. From sixty-four hundred thousand verses, there are thirty-five thousand chapters. There are twelve thousand fascicles. What is said is equal to the edge of the sky. It cuts off the conceptual thoughts of sentient beings to be tamed. From this, the subject matter is briefly summarized. There are one hundred and eighty nails. There are two thousand five hundred obstacles. There are three thousand important gatherings. There are forty thousand faults and obscurations. The tantras named are twenty thousand. The order of words and phrases is clearly explained. Thus it is. Now, what is particularly superior among these is the definitive establishment of the view and practice of all the categories of the Secret Teaching (Manngag Dépa) on the ground of liberation: Everything is the Bodhicitta that has no basis for liberation. By what is it liberated? It is the self-luminous clarity that has abandoned. It is clear in the space that has no basis and no root. Because it is not made or fabricated, it is primordially liberated. Self-liberation does not depend on conditions. Because it is liberated upon seeing, it is free from all dependencies. It is liberated from the extremes of being designated as one or many. There are two aspects to this: measuring the general sphere of meaning of that which has no basis for liberation, and separately distinguishing the particular reasons for each. First, in this way, the nature of reality is existent, but invisible. It is non-existent, but not cut off. It does not fall into either of the two sides. Nor is there any clinging to the Middle Way. Therefore, for anything that has no beginning or end, no birth or death, no going or coming, no three times, no edge or center, and transcends effort and accomplishment, there is no basis for liberation. Because it is self-liberated like a water ripple. Because the conditions for liberation do not enter, the nature of reality is all-pervasive. Because it has no basis or root, in the space beyond words, thoughts, and expressions, the self-luminous, directly perceived insight and co-emergence, the aggregates of afflictions and conceptual thoughts have never existed from the beginning. They have never not existed. Abandoning does not abandon. Purifying does not purify. Transforming does not change. If one does not realize the nature of liberation that does not liberate, then all dualistic phenomena such as what is to be abandoned and what abandons are all things. One entity, it cannot be both pure and liberated. In this way, if wisdom makes the two, pure and liberated, then the mind has not seen wisdom. Wisdom has not seen the mind, because for contradictions that cannot exist simultaneously, the term is not allowed. Similarly, the past and future are contradictory things, so the latter has not abandoned the former. One exists

When one moment ceases, and simultaneous moments are confused with before and after, then the antidote should be abandoned, and the antidote will become something to be abandoned. This is because the mind stream is simultaneous in one moment. As it says in the "Union of Sun and Moon": If you do not realize suchness, yoga is like the body and its shadow. From that, that itself arises spontaneously, so abandoning is not abandoning. Likewise, it is not through cultivation, nor does it change through transformation. If you do not realize the unchanging essence, like a crystal rock or a jade stone, it cannot be cultivated or melted. It abides purely by its own nature, and the yogi ascertains it. Likewise, it is not pacification itself. If you do not know manifest insight, like Mount Meru, the king of mountains, no one can destroy it. Liberation is not through an antidote. If you do not know self-purification without searching, like muddy water wanting to be cleared, it will not be cleared no matter how much you try. Even if it is cleared, it is not the nature of reality. If you do not know the expanse of self-appearance, like the appearance of an ordinary fool, it is not the reversal of clinging to reality. Thus it is said. Therefore, from the perspective of the entrance of the levels of the individual's mind, there are two types of self-liberation: with effort and without effort. The first is that from the state of immovability from the nature of reality, whatever collection of afflictions and conceptual thoughts arises, it is recognized by the insight that knows its own nature, and it does not move from its state. It is not bound by an antidote, and it does not follow after it, but it is placed in that state, because it is not established in that way on the basis of awareness, so just as water that is not muddy is clear, it is clear without the miraculous nature of flowing and changing. Effortless is that the place of arising and the one who arises are of one taste, so the nature of reality and conceptual thought, essence and display, are not established as two, but arise and liberate themselves, so whatever arises cannot stand. As the former said: These are two levels of mind, with effort and without effort. Those with effort remain in their own place. For all the measures of habitual appearances, it is the appearance of pure wisdom. When everything inside and outside arises spontaneously, it is not born from conditions. However long they arise and change, they are liberated in their own self-abiding state. Therefore, it is the appearance of yoga. Those without effort are like this: self-liberation by oneself, in oneself. Since one's own nature is self-liberating, like iron cutting iron, and stone breaking stone, it is one's own antidote.
