If one expects to prove one's own view with reason, to see whether it is correct or incorrect, whether it is realized or not, then the basis upon which one relies is itself wrong. Therefore, the dharma that relies on it is also wrong. For example, if one relies on the self-nature that is free from elaboration, then both the view to be realized and the realization that realizes its self-nature with wisdom are the same in being true or false, and the self-nature is not established. Like the horns of a rabbit and the son of a barren woman, they are merely falsely named through words and letters. In reality, there is no thought or idea, no thinking of what is or is not, and no mental activity. It is like moxibustion that hits the mark. As the Great Garuda says: There is no Buddha, who binds beings? Delusion and ignorance, who among beings possesses a name? Therefore, there is no liberation from the beginning, and later liberation does not appear. Who wants a path and fruit without a basis? Because of wanting, it obscures the place of liberation. Emptiness, clarity, existence, and non-existence, permanence and annihilation, cause and effect, basis and continuum, for these, it is the same as the expanse of limitless space. Divisions: There are three: scattered talk, conversation, and the teachings of the tantric self-doctrine. The first is that since the wisdom that is separate from the mind cannot be corrected by distinctions, no artificial fabrication is added. Since the nature of ultimate truth has no two truths and no cause and effect, it is free from dependence on new liberation. Placing the three kayas in the appearance of the path, it does not depend on other objects of knowledge, so there is nothing that is not liberated. The second is that which is spoken in the manner of conversation, whose essence is not confused, the root of self-nature's conceptualization is severed, and it is separated from the grasping of characteristics. Divisions: The conversation forgotten by a fool is the wind of the essential point. The mind of the wind essential point dissolves into the nature of reality, so wisdom from the source cuts off the connection between meaning, door, and the three, and the movement of the essential point is liberated in itself, thereby cutting off the speech of samsara and nirvana. The conversation that occurs at any time is that since there is nothing that is not contained in the expanse, it is considered to pervade samsara and nirvana. Since emptiness has no grasping, the essence has no change. Since neither has any fabrication, it is the grasping of the wisdom of self-nature. The third is the pith instructions of the tantric self-doctrine. Samsara and nirvana have no acceptance or rejection. Since the nature of reality does not abide in words and letters, emptiness cannot be touched by terms. Divisions: The view is gathered into one point, so non-elaboration pervades the basis. Karma has no good or bad, so the three realms appear as completely liberated.

As self-nature dawns in emptiness and clarity, there is no benefit or harm from virtue or vice. Since characteristics lack letters, one is not enlightened by various vehicles, so faculties are liberated in a single, sudden burst. If divided, there are two: the view of apparent imputation, which is without action; and the gathering of mental thoughts into the unborn. The first is that since the essence lacks dharmata, even the name of Buddha is not established. Since self-nature is without cessation, samsara appears as distinct. Since characteristics do not abide in one, there is no limit to view and meditation. The second is that since the essence is pure in the unborn, afflictions are cleansed without a basis. Although self-nature appears without ceasing, it is free from the effort of acceptance and rejection. Since characteristics are primordially liberated, the source of samsara and nirvana collapses. At those times, the heat of view and meditation is eliminated in the manner of bloodletting and clearing obstacles: when the view wavers, one knows the faults of samsara; when the view is obtained, body and speech gain warmth; when the view is stable, samsara and nirvana are clearly distinguished. When meditation wavers, wind and mind are mastered; when meditation is obtained, the mind enters the path; when meditation is stable, the power of awareness is perfected. When conduct wavers, conduct has no attachment; when conduct is obtained, delusion is suppressed; when conduct is stable, the heat of the three kayas is attained. Thus, by eliminating the obstacle of dharmata with view, one attains enlightenment even without relying on dharma. By eliminating the obstacle of distraction with meditation, all thoughts and feelings appear as samadhi. By eliminating the obstacle of appearance with conduct, the causes of appearance are liberated into dharmata. Thus, the three of view, meditation, and conduct, whether one is hidden and two are manifest, or two are hidden and one is manifest, etc., are famous terms for losing the point in grasping and the grasped, and for thoroughly revealing awareness. For example, in the Madhyamaka school, the vajra sliver and the proofs of existence and non-existence, arising and cessation, etc. Thus, the profound classes of instructions have an outer circle like the body, an inner circle like the eye, a secret circle like the heart, and a most secret, unsurpassed circle like Kuntuzangpo (Samantabhadra). As it says in "The Lamp That Illuminates": The outer circle is like the body, extensively explaining terms; the inner circle is like the eye, what is seen is the dharma of symbolic expression; the secret circle is like the heart, what is remembered is the essential dharma; this is the complete person of the body.
