It is reasonable at the time of descent. However, that is because it is a backward-looking understanding, a mental view, so the process of the ability to see the nature of knowledge as it is, gradually increasing, has just been explained clearly. Therefore, the unmistakable suchness that is determined in this way does not abide in the path of words and letters, so in the mantra path, relying on blessings and means, one realizes it as it is in one's own mindstream, so the metaphors and meanings that rely on purifying substances are not confused, and abide in the true meaning. In the 'Explanatory Sutra,' it says: Regarding the Dharma wheel and the second one, the Dharma wheel turned by the Blessed One is supreme, with gaps, and a place of debate where the meaning needs to be distinguished. After establishing it as provisional meaning, finally, he turned the third Dharma wheel, which has excellent distinctions and is extremely rare and wonderful. The Dharma wheel turned by the Blessed One is unsurpassed, without gaps, and of definitive meaning, not a place of debate. This is clearly stated. Some say: If that is the case, does the Tathagatagarbha reside in the realm of sentient beings like matter, or does it reside like awareness? If it is the former, it is the same as the self of the non-Buddhists. Because they do not believe that something without awareness is form, so it is like showing that no one can see it. If it is the latter, then the essence becomes conditioned, because it is together with the eight aggregates of consciousness. If asked in this way, there is no harm in the former, because the characteristic of abiding invisibly with the three liberations, the non-Buddhists do not understand, so they measure it with size, and do not consider it as the dharma of body and wisdom. As it is said in the Lankavatara Sutra: 'Great Wisdom, my teaching of the Tathagatagarbha is not the same as the self spoken of by the non-Buddhists. Great Wisdom, the Tathagatas, Arhats, and Perfectly Awakened Ones, for the terms emptiness, vast expanse, nirvana, unborn, signless, wishless, etc., teach with the Tathagatagarbha, so that children will not be afraid of selflessness.'
