Thus it is said. Also, the Root Wisdom says, "Whatever is the nature of the Tathagata, is the nature of these beings." Thus it is. Although it is so, there are many debates about what is right and wrong about this, but just as a fish is comfortable in water, it is only an appearance of comfort in terms of words and terms, and the true nature of the essence is not seen in the ultimate meaning. As it says in the Sutra of the Essence of the Buddha, "Neither ordinary individuals, nor hearers, nor self-enlightened ones, nor Bodhisattvas can see the essence of the Buddha as it is. For example, a blind person asks another about the color of butter. He says, 'It is like snow.' When he touches the snow with his hand, he perceives the color of butter as cold. He says, 'It is like the wings of a swan.' When he hears the sound of the swan's wings, he perceives the color of snow as noisy. He asks, 'What is the color of the wings?' He says, 'It is like a conch shell.' When he touches the conch shell, he feels that it is smooth, and he perceives it as smooth. No matter what he says, the blind person cannot know the color as it is. Likewise, the nature of the Buddha is very difficult to see." Thus it is said. It is so difficult because it is nothing other than the appropriation of the five aggregates. Therefore, when the wisdom of the noble ones, which transcends the eight collections of consciousness, is directly seen without elimination or retention, the profound definitive sutras abide in the same intention. As it says in the Sutra of the Moon Lamp, "The realms of the world are pure and empty. Whatever sutras I have spoken, the words and syllables are different, but the meaning is the same. It is not possible to express everything. If one meditates on one word, then one will meditate on all of them. All the Buddhas have spoken many teachings. All the teachings are emptiness. Whoever is skilled in meaning, from learning this word, the Buddha's teachings are not difficult to obtain." Thus it is said. Likewise, depending on the three stages of taming beings, as it says in the Sutra Requested by the King of Dharani Empowerment, "Son of lineage, for example, a skilled jeweler who knows well the method of purifying jewels, takes an impure jewel from the family of precious jewels, first washes it with strong salt water, and then cleans it with a strand of hair. However, he does not give up diligence just because of that. After that, with food

After washing with fine juice, it is thoroughly wiped with woolen clothes. Just that is not abandoning diligence either. After that, it is washed with the juice of great medicine, and then wiped with a thin cloth to cleanse it. When it is thoroughly cleansed and free from dirt, it is called a great kind of beryl. Son of the lineage, similarly, the Tathagata also knows the realm of completely impure beings, and with the words of aversion to ignorance, suffering, selflessness, and impurity, he makes beings who are fond of samsara generate aversion, thereby introducing them to the Vinaya of the Noble Ones. Just that is not the Tathagata abandoning diligence either. After that, with the words of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, he makes people realize the nature of the Tathagata. Just that is not the Tathagata abandoning diligence either. After that, with the words of the irreversible wheel of Dharma, the words of the three wheels being completely pure, he introduces beings with various natures into the realm of the Tathagata. Thus it is said. This analogy compares the realm of beings connected with defilements to a completely impure precious jewel. First, wiping with salt water and hair fragments is the purification method of the first wheel. Then, wiping with fish juice and wool is the purification method of the intermediate wheel. Then, wiping with haritaki juice and thin cloth is shown as the purification method of the last wheel. It shows that the latter has more purifying power than the former. Therefore, the first wheel mainly makes beings turn away from samsara, the second wheel shows the nature of the Tathagatagarbha, and the third wheel shows that for beings with various thoughts, their mindstream naturally possesses the essence. Therefore, among the two Mahayana lineages, for the sake of the intermediate ones, the beings to be tamed do not rely on the last wheel, and can speculate on the meaning of the intermediate wheel by their own power. But for the sake of the latter, the beings to be tamed cannot speculate in that way, and entering into seeking the meaning of the intermediate wheel, the difference between these two in terms of sequence is considered to be the difference between sharp and dull faculties, and the view is determined by the fine analysis of hearing and thinking.
