Regarding Dharma, there is no practice and no non-practice. Regarding the power of Dzogchen, there is no perfection and no non-perfection. Regarding the play of Dzogchen, there is no arising and no non-arising. Regarding the meaning of Dzogchen, there is no meditation and no non-meditation. Regarding the awareness of Dzogchen, there is no high and no non-high. The wisdom of Dzogchen plays in all great secrets. Regarding the limit of Dzogchen, there is no "this" to point out. Regarding the meaning of Dzogchen, there are no words and letters. The view of the King of Dzogchen remains as it is. Without words and letters, one practices in the meaning of Dzogchen. Without clarity, dimness, grasping, and conceptualization, it is the force of self-appearing bliss. The meaning of Dzogchen is without remaining in such a way. Thus it is said. The essence of that view is the truth of the noble ones, the self-knowing wisdom that is separate from the two graspings of grasper and grasped. It is that which is equally endowed with the Dharmakaya of the Buddha to be realized. Thus, in the Noble Cloud of Jewels Sutra it says: Asked: What is meant by "Thatness"? Answered: "Thatness" is a sublime term for the true meaning. This is the self-knowing of each individual, which cannot be designated by words and letters. Why? Because it transcends the realm of all speaking, expression, and conceptualization; it is the realm of the wisdom of the noble ones, abiding as it has always been. Thus, the last line also clearly shows the actual meaning of original purity. Like this, those who have not realized it, with discipline accompanied by misconduct, or with a mind that holds views as supreme, fixate on the realm of sound and speculation alone, thereby slandering the great wisdom that is beyond words and beyond mind, and clinging entirely to the meditative absorption of lower vehicles, and scolding the tantras that teach the great perfection stage of the noble path, this is the mind being disturbed by a wild spirit, as it says in the Sutra Encouraging Supreme Intention: Maitreya, those who are satiated and arrogant from much learning, separated from proper attention, their mindstream becomes wild, separated from shamatha and vipassana, and far from the profoundly deep Dharma of the Buddha. Therefore, to apply intellectual refutations to the profound view is an inexhaustible fault, so it is necessary to establish the vajra (view) on the nature of phenomena, the knowable, where definitive meaning arises from meditation.

The profound meaning of the words' lineage is not something that can be definitively established through speculative knowledge. This is also stated in the Holy Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra. Bodhisattva Dharmaśreṣṭhin asked: "Lord, when I went to the realm of the Tathāgata Great Fame, the Arrogant One, many non-Buddhists engaged in meaningless contemplation, measurement, discrimination, and searching for characteristics. Because they did not understand the true meaning, those foolish ones argued, reviled, slandered, and punished one another. Seeing this, I thought: 'Alas! If only the ultimate meaning of the Tathāgatas, which is truly beyond all speculation, could be taught!'" The Buddha replied: "Dharmaśreṣṭhin, I have truly awakened to Buddhahood beyond all speculation. Having awakened, I have distinguished and clarified it. I have taught that the ultimate meaning is known by the noble ones through their own self-awareness, while what is to be known by ordinary beings is the realm of speculation. Speculation is the realm of signs. The ultimate meaning is inexpressible. Speculation is the manifest increase of contention. The ultimate meaning is the pacification of contention. Truly, speculation cannot investigate, infer, or measure it. Self-aware wisdom is an immeasurable realm, inexpressible and with all terms cut off. Being free from contention is the ultimate Dharma, which is beyond the realm of speculation." Thus it is said. The way it abides in the continuum of sentient beings is through the meaning of the final turning of the wheel, showing how the nature of knowledge abides for those with sharp faculties. In the Holy Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra, the secret essence of the Tathāgatagarbha, its nature being completely pure, unchanging, and immutable, is shown very clearly, and so on. In the Noble Teacher's Praise of the Dharmadhātu, it is also said: "Just as water exists in the center of the earth, existing without impurity, likewise, wisdom exists within the afflictions, existing without impurity in the same way." It is also the Tathāgatagarbha, as stated in the Uttaratantra: "The complete Buddha's body is for the benefit of others, and because Suchness is undifferentiated, and because there is the lineage, all embodied beings constantly have the Buddha-nature.
