The awareness at this time is the wisdom of individual discernment, but its function is to pervade all dharmata. Therefore, at the time of hearing and thinking wisdom, it is a conceptual investigation, which will be explained below. At the time of meditation wisdom, because it is non-conceptual, it does not grasp the limits of habit, it is the self-aware wisdom of individual self-awareness, as it is said in the "Summary of Manjushri's View": Wisdom penetrates the deep mind, without any habit. So on. To proclaim the clamor of Vipassanā in the great forest retreat of Śamatha is a manifestation of not distinguishing well between what is and what is not. As it is said in the Noble Jewel Cloud Sutra: Śamatha is one-pointedness of mind, Vipassanā is to individually discern the Dharma as it is. This is clear. Therefore, in the end, not knowing that Śamatha and Vipassanā are of the same essence, without distinction, and taking all abiding as Śamatha and all observation as Vipassanā, is something that has become different from the teachings of the Tathāgata. As it is said in the Bodhisattva Pitaka: The Śamatha of the Bodhisattva is correct thought, not even abiding in the concept of Śamatha. Vipassanā is the seeing of view, not even seeing the view itself. Whoever sees it in this way sees it correctly. Because it contradicts the above scripture. Individually: In terms of the two, two distinctions are established: arising from wisdom and arising from instructions. Arising from wisdom, following the sound, focusing on the meaning of hearing and pacifying, thereby understanding the meaning, is the characteristic of Vipassanā. Arising from instructions, following the meaning, the mind not moving is Śamatha, knowing its nature is Vipassanā. As it is said, as it is said in the Noble Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra: Śamatha and Vipassanā are two, arising from wisdom and arising from instructions. Arising from wisdom is: remembering the words of the twelve scriptures is Śamatha, understanding its meaning is Vipassanā. Arising from instructions is: making the mind unmoving with instructions is Śamatha, understanding its meaning is Vipassanā. So on. Therefore, the former is the preliminary practice of dhyāna, and the latter is the actual practice.

If the difference between right and wrong is not known, even if one arrives at the destination, one will not abandon the efforts on the path, and therefore one will not attain the pacification of the senses. Even so, one must combine it with the faculties of beings. In short, the superior faculties transform evil thoughts into Dharmakaya, and if good and evil are equal, there is no need to rely on antidotes. The intermediate faculties, by becoming accustomed to the path of union of clarity and emptiness, all good and evil thoughts dissolve into the Dharmadhatu. The inferior faculties first seek calm abiding, and after gaining stability on the object of focus, they then practice the wisdom of insight, gradually like not finding mud and stones in the golden land, no matter what thoughts of mind and mental factors arise, they will appear as the primordial liberation in which appearance and mind are inseparable. That is to say, for those with superior faculties, awareness has matured, and no matter how many illusions of samsara arise, such as conceptual thoughts and afflictions, at the very moment of arising, the Dharmakaya will naturally be liberated, good cannot increase, and evil cannot harm, therefore there is no need to rely on antidotes, because awareness that has not been lost to the object, arising and liberation are simultaneous, as the Self-Arisen Sutra says: "Because there is no birth, there is no death, because there is no grasping, there is self-liberation." And as the All-Creating King Sutra says: "As it is, without alteration, the intention of the Buddhas, whatever thoughts of mind and mental factors arise, knowing that they abide in the unborn nature, free from all actions and clinging to characteristics." For those with intermediate faculties, without losing the state of realizing the view of unbornness, they practice being free from dullness and agitation, so that in the samadhi of union of calm abiding and insight, like the sky, all the elaborations of mind and mental factors disappear like clouds dissolving into the sky. The King of Samadhi Sutra says: "As in the sky, there is little cloud, in an instant the circle of clouds appears, arising and disappearing, the circle of clouds is no more, first one must observe from where it arises, all phenomena should be known in this way." Among them, the difference between sinking and dullness is: sinking is close to the obscuration of the unstated, and dullness belongs to ignorance, therefore even in Vasubandhu's Hearer's Ground, this is distinguished. The inferior ones are those whose minds are scattered and untamed, like monkeys.
