It is spoken of in terms of relying on various things. Although four contradictions are spoken of in this way, they are actually one thing. The basis of reliance is the ālaya, and the reliance is the eight consciousnesses, existing in a way that understands the connection between them. Because there is no gap between inside and outside, it is called the ālaya-consciousness. The sense consciousnesses, in terms of each consciousness grasping the five objects without conceptualization, are called the five sense consciousnesses. The functions of the various ālaya are: first, to create the basis of confusion; second, to connect with body and mind and experience happiness and suffering; third, to be the cause of connecting the body with many assemblies; and fourth, to accumulate karma and afflictions and accomplish the connection of cause and condition. As it is said in the Wheel of Spontaneous Bliss: Although the five senses are the objects of appearance, If they are not analyzed by the mind, They are the ālaya, but not consciousness. That is also of the mind's consciousness, Although various imprints are divided, Because they cannot increase the imprints, They are consciousness, but not the ālaya. In whatever way the five appear, With non-duality completely mingled, When the eight consciousnesses gather and assemble, It is said to be the ālaya-consciousness. In short, the reasons for applying the term ālaya are: Leaving the traces of previous actions, hence imprints; Closely taking up the later, hence fully ripened; The order of cause and effect ripening successively; And making the combination of happiness and suffering, hence the term ālaya is applied. Those who do not distinguish this kind of difference, Think that the ālaya is the basis of all things, And also the basis of nirvana. Mistaking the ālaya for the dharmakāya, even in the common vehicle it is prohibited, let alone the unsurpassable secret vehicle. In Rangshar it says: Some think that the ālaya is the dharmakāya, In order to answer that, The definition of the ālaya is like this. Then he answered: Because everything is complete, it is the ālaya. Then refuted with a question: Is it possible for the Buddha to change? Because the ālaya manifests various things, Because everything is complete from it, Sentient beings can become Buddhas. Why is everything complete? Or it will become alternating. Why do various things manifest? Sometimes it will become a Buddha, Sometimes it will become a sentient being. Why is there alternation? Then asked

In rebuttal, it is said: Then does the Alaya-consciousness not exist? Then, answering the question posed, it is said: The Alaya-consciousness clings to conceptual thought, and is tainted by various deluded knowledges. The Alaya-consciousness is an object of ignorance. Therefore, these two need to be well distinguished. In the "Six Spaces," it is also said: If the Alaya-consciousness and the Dharmakaya are not distinguished, it is like a knowledge that perceives one object as different, and the individual meanings cannot be manifested. Thus it is said. Therefore, the characteristics of the Dharmakaya are: its essence is the heart of emptiness-wisdom, its nature is the heart of clarity-light, and its compassion is the heart of unceasing awareness. Therefore, mind and intellect, as well as the root of ignorance, are severed, transcending the practice of grounds and paths. As it is said in "Self-Arisen": The immutable palace of the Dharmakaya resides clearly in the center of each citta It is the heart of emptiness-wisdom! It is the heart of clarity-light! It is the heart of self-arisen awareness! The Dharmakaya possesses three hearts. Realizing the meaning of wisdom, there is no traversing the grounds and paths. This great Dharmakaya, beyond expression, dwells in all, yet is not realized by all. There is no mind, no intellect, no delusion of ignorance. Thus it is said. Moreover, the Dharmakaya is symbolized through the door of words, as well as Bodhicitta, as well as self-arisen wisdom, and as an indication of the spontaneously accomplished great expanse. However, the very means of indication is conceptual thought, therefore its own nature is inexpressible, beyond thought, free from elaboration, and appears as the sole and unique. Therefore, the state of the Dharmakaya is called the Great Perfection. It does not affirm self-knowing self-illumination, as in the Yogacara school, and it does not use emptiness like the sky as a basis for calculation, as an analogy measured beyond the limits of thought, which is different from the Madhyamaka school. Furthermore, since there is no inside, outside, or three times, it is not established as the mind of ordinary beings. Also, since there is no self or other, it is not established as one's own awareness, like the eternalist views of the tirthikas. Also, although there has never been grasping and the grasped, it is not established as being separated from the two knowledges, like an absorption of cessation. Also, although it is not in the realm of sensation and awareness, it does not exist as an obstacle to higher seeing. Also, although there are no mind and mental factors, it is not established as an unstated mind, like the four alternatives of the sense bases. Also, since there is no clarity or non-clarity, it is not established as merely the self-illumination of the Alaya-consciousness. Also, since it transcends awareness and non-awareness, awareness also
