Sha! The obscuration of the Alaya-consciousness, like a boat, floats in both samsara and nirvana. From that very basis, the nature of delusion and liberation also arises, like falling asleep and waking up from it. Delusion is like the heavy sleep of weakened senses, liberation is like the state of awakening from that. In general, both samsara and nirvana are one in the nature of the basic awareness. As it says in Rangshar: The basis of sentient beings and the basis of Buddhas, are definitely distinguished by one difference. How are they distinguished? The spontaneously accomplished play of appearances, not liberated on the level of awareness, but becoming other-powered, becoming the nature of mind and mental factors, like an opened brocade, is the basis of many appearances. It is the initial form of all the habitual tendencies of the three realms, the karma in between, and the final container, therefore it is called Alaya. As it says in Rangshar: The Alaya grasps conceptual thoughts, and is deceived by various deluded consciousnesses. The Alaya is the object of ignorance, and is called the basis of all. Where "all" is a plural word, and "basis" is abiding as the support of various collections. The Dharmakaya has not become other-powered by ignorance, and is beyond mind and mental factors, therefore it is not a container for various objects, and does not co-exist with the mind, etc., which holds the object and the subject as "I", and is not defiled by the thoughts of karma and habitual tendencies, therefore it is beyond the continuum of thoughts. As it says in the Garland of Pearls: The Dharmakaya is the exhaustion of defilements, empty and clear, clear and pervasive, not defiled by thoughts, the mind is clear, it is free from elaborations, pervasive and empty like the sky, free from all symbols of self-purity. Also, if we distinguish from the point of view of support and supported, the Alaya is the support, the mind is the supported, the Dharmakaya is the support, and the wisdom is the supported. As it says in the Six Spaces: Alas! Great Bodhisattva, the place of the mind is the Alaya. Why is that? Because the Alaya gathers all the objects of thought, and is known as the mind. The place of wisdom is the Dharmakaya. Why is that? Because the Dharmakaya does not have all thoughts, and does not have the consciousness that grasps as different objects. If we distinguish from the point of view of examples, it is like a ship floating on the ocean. Thus, the Dharmakaya is the primordial purity, the awareness free from elaborations, the nature not established in anything, various appearances

Although the very basis has not ceased, it is like the clear ocean because it turns away from sudden defilements. The nature of the alaya, which arises from the reversal of the spontaneously present awareness that has become an obstacle to that Dharmakaya, is the basis, pervasive, and essence of all ignorance. It is like a boat filled with beings emanated from mind and mental factors, karma and habitual patterns, and is the function of the eight consciousnesses. As it says in Rangshar: "The example of the alaya and the Dharmakaya is like the way of the ocean and the boat." Furthermore, if the spontaneously present awareness does not turn back, then the part of sudden ignorance will naturally turn back, and like a boat going to land, the obstacle of the Dharmakaya will remain in a state of purity and duality. Thus, the essence of the Dharmakaya, the immaculate awareness, is not something to be reversed in any way, because it exists as the basis of ultimate liberation, and is therefore like awakening from sleep. The nature of the alaya is like being asleep, and it is the basis for the arising of various illusions and dreams, so it needs to be awakened from. As it says in that very text: "The example of illusion and liberation is like sleeping and waking, because there is a difference in the faculties." Furthermore, the alaya and the phenomena that depend on it are defilements to be purified, so the parts of sleep and dreams need to be reversed. The essence of the Dharmakaya, the immaculate awareness, is temporarily something to be familiarized with, and ultimately exists as the basis of realization and liberation, so it is not something to be reversed at any time, because it is the place of liberation of the fruit. Furthermore, there are four types of alaya: the alaya of original meaning, the alaya of combining meaning, the alaya of habitual body, and the alaya of various habitual patterns. The first is spoken of from the perspective of opening the door to samsara by the coemergent ignorance that relies on the first movement of discriminating awareness from within that space. The second is that the discriminating consciousness itself, looking outward with its own ignorance, combines with samsara, and combines with nirvana from its own nature of awareness. The third is that because that consciousness itself has the habitual patterns of the body, it is designated from the perspective of the manifestation of the earth's nature of flesh, the water's nature of blood, the fire's nature of light, and the wind's nature of mind-body. The fourth is the habitual patterns of the mind of that consciousness itself.
