Because the land was lost, the city became empty. Completely, if one meditates on earth and water, they will appear as earth and water; if a yogi monk meditates on impurity and bones, they will appear as those things, then why would they not appear due to the increase of beginningless habitual tendencies? The son of the gods said: Due to the power of increased habitual tendencies, why do various appearances manifest? Manjushri said: All appearances are uncertain. The appearance of some is the darkness of others. For example, even with regard to earth alone, some perceive earth as earth, some perceive earth as fire, some perceive earth as enjoyment, and some perceive earth as suffering. Some perceive fire as fire, some perceive fire as enjoyment, some perceive fire as a dwelling, and some perceive fire as food. Some perceive water as water, some perceive water as fire, some perceive water as earth, some perceive water as nectar, and some perceive water as a dwelling. Some perceive the sky as sky, some perceive the sky as a dwelling, and some perceive the sky as earth. Therefore, because of uncertainty, due to the power of habitual tendencies, it appears in whatever way. Thus it is said. Therefore, perceiving the four elements as their respective elements is the appearance of human beings. Furthermore, even for the same earth, hell beings perceive it as fire, farmers perceive it as enjoyment, and those oppressed by karma perceive it as suffering. Similarly, for fire, the fire god perceives it as enjoyment, pretas with bodies of fire perceive it as a dwelling, and fireflies perceive it as food. Likewise for water, hell beings perceive it as fire, pretas perceive it as pus and blood, the inhabitants of Hati Island perceive it as earth, gods perceive it as nectar, and Paranirmita-vasavartins and others perceive it as showers of jewels and flowers, and nagas perceive it as a dwelling. For the sky, devas perceive it as a dwelling, and gods perceive it as earth. From the perspective of the two truths: Though the object is one, minds are different, therefore it is seen as not truly established. Thus it is said. All of these are the ways in which appearances are fabricated by the respective karmic appearances and habitual tendencies of beings. The Guhyagarbha Tantra says: By grasping at self with conceptual thought, one forcefully ties a knot in the sky. In order to show the Buddha Dharma, which is without bondage, without liberation, and spontaneously perfect from the beginning, he performs various kinds of emanations. Thus it is said. Even so, the object of appearance

It is not the mind. Although the image of a face enters a mirror, it is merely the function of dependent arising. The face and the mirror never mix. Thus, when an image appears in a mirror, the clear mirror itself serves as the basis for the image to appear, and it is related to it in the form of a face, or it appears merely because of the accumulation of the energy of the face that creates the appearance. The image of the face is not the real face, nor does it create a form different from the face. Similarly, the various phenomena that appear in illusion are merely the dependent arising of causal illusion, and they do not exist as external entities. As the noble *Samadhiraja Sutra* says: "In the surface of a mirror or in a vessel of sesame oil, when a woman looks with her face adorned, the entire mandala of the face appears therein, yet it is neither existent nor non-existent. All dharmas should be known in the same way." Its nature is also such that when approached, it is the state arising from the gathering of the apprehended and the apprehender. In the appearance of that which is non-existent, there is the deluded mind of grasping. When a patterned rope is seen, it is mistaken for a snake. The first consciousness is the object of apprehension, and the subsequent discriminating thought is the apprehender. The characteristic of appearance is that it appears as non-existent, not exceeding the consciousness of a dream. However, the sudden deluded mind of grasping onto it arises. For example, taking the external object of the form aggregate as an example, at the first moment of seeing a patterned rope, even though it is not a snake, it is undoubtedly perceived as a snake. This is the part of the mind produced by the feeling aggregate, and that first moment is the object of apprehension. The apprehending mind is the mental factor that arises later and discriminates, possessing the nature of the aggregate of discrimination. As it is said in the discipline of Avalokiteshvara: "Among them, the apprehended is the mind that grasps the object, and the apprehender is born from the mind that discriminates it." Thus, those who do not understand and are full of pride believe that the apprehended is merely the external, coarse object of appearance, and that the apprehender is only their own consciousness, which is an even greater delusion than illusion. To refute this view, if what appears as a snake is the apprehended, and the apprehender is the master consciousness, then even beings who do not distinguish between appearance and the object of appearance...
