From the appearance of the vessel and essence, which are suddenly contained by the mind, the vessel refers to the realm of form that arises from the memory of sentient beings as its basis. From the increase of memory arises the formless realm, and from grasping memory as separate arises the desire realm, thus it is shown as the wish-fulfilling tree. The essence refers to the alaya-consciousness that obscures awareness, like an egg that does not think of anything. From this arise the three: object, sense consciousness, and feeling, which are represented by the symbols of egg and moisture, i.e., the union of sun and moon. Regarding the realms contained by the inner mind, there are two: the realm of the vessel that gathers sentient beings, and the realm that arises from the nature of mind itself. The realm of the vessel refers to the realm of form that arises from the memory of sentient beings as its basis, the formless realm that arises from the increase of memory, and the desire realm that arises from grasping memory as separate. These are shown by the above and so on. The fundamental ignorance that is the basis of delusion is: the basis of delusion arises from its own impurity. First, the actual ignorance called the causal condition arises, which is the ignorance of not knowing the basis. From this arises the delusion called the objective condition, such as the ignorance of the object. From this arises the condition of ownership, which is the clinging to "I" in relation to a tree. From this arises the immediately preceding condition, which is that consciousness becomes coarse and grasps the grasped. From this, afflictions become coarse. This is called the fundamental ignorance that is the basis of delusion. The ignorance of grasping and conceptualization is: from this arise countless aggregates of afflictions. This is also like this: the six grasping minds arise. The mind that is in accordance with ignorance, the mind of the consciousness of mind, the mind of determination, the mind of universal seeking, the mind of extreme coarseness, and the mind of certainty. This is also like this: the mind that is in accordance with ignorance is like this: the root is the actual awareness, and it is accompanied by the movement of mind. This is the mind that is in accordance with ignorance. The consciousness of mind is held by the consciousness that thinks the object is mine, and because it is attached to "I" and "mine," it becomes a slave to afflictions, therefore it is called the consciousness of mind. The mind of determination is: held by the consciousness that thinks the object is my object, therefore attachment arises to it, so it is called determination.

The mind that always seeks is controlled by objects, gathering all subtle afflictions. Therefore, it is called the mind that always seeks. The extremely coarse mind, with coarse afflictions, commits many evil deeds such as killing and breaking vows. The mind that definitely abides, regarding those appearances, thinking "this is mine," and thinking "that is someone else's," that is the mind that definitely abides. This is called the ignorance of clinging to discrimination. The contrived ignorance of the path is when the six consciousnesses gather and obscure the path of wisdom, that is, the mind does not see wisdom and does not make it clear. Wisdom has no discrimination, but the mind has movement, therefore it obscures the path to Buddhahood. This is called the contrived ignorance of the path. The ignorance of unknowing and delusion, because one does not recognize the light of one's own appearance, one repeatedly transmigrates, therefore transmigrating in samsara. This is the ignorance of unknowing and delusion. Thus, because six kinds of ignorance arise, one does not recognize the appearance of wisdom. So it is said. Then, because of the connection with the consciousness of the extremely coarse six objects, therefore, the nature of the Sugata-garbha, the mind free from elaboration, this mind without self-nature, is also bound, clinging to "I" and "mine," therefore deluded in the dream-like samsara, and clinging to self, therefore becoming beings with various kinds of illusions. In existence, some are light, some are darkness; some are nectar, some are water and fire. All completely contradictory concepts, the habitual tendencies follow, nothing is certain. So it is said. Thus, in the *Lotus Play Sutra*, the son of the gods, Lotus Play, said to Manjushri: Manjushri, were these external objects made by a maker, or how should they be viewed? Manjushri said: Son of the gods, these external objects were not made by a maker, but are appearances of the habitual tendencies of mind or discrimination. The son of the gods said: Even if habitual tendencies increase, how can mountains, seas, sun, moon, etc., appear as if they have become solid and dense? Manjushri said: Son of the gods, it is possible to appear. In the great city of Varanasi, there was a Brahmin named Fire Offering who meditated on his body becoming a tiger, therefore, the people of the city saw a tiger.
